  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • A day to day basic workday consists of working on vehicles, carrying out any training provided, keeping up with college work and learning about different sections. most days are the same, however there are slow days where not much is happening but you can then get days which are flat out.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have personally developed multiple skills from knowledge based skills to hands on practical skills such as the use of different tooling or operation of specialised equipment. Knowledge based skills come from the theory side to components that are learnt such as how to follow a wiring diagram for a certain vehicle.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Due to the Global Pandemic it has made the apprenticeship very challenging seen as there was a long period of time where us apprentices could not work on site for our safety and others so a lot of time was wasted. when in the work place, the jobs being carried out can be very enjoyable but also very dull.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My programme isnt very structured. I was the first year group that was introduced to college blocks away from home rather that going o a local college. there have been many issues that have occured due to it being a whole new process for the apprentices and the company so a lot of things have been trial and error which doesnt help the apprenticeship.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I have personally recieved a fair amount of support with the company. they have provided me with certificates and qualifications on tooling, equipment and training courses. the company put in a lot of effort to make sure you get the correct and useful training needed and its as easy as asking for the training

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have been given support from my training provider to help towards my qualification by being given lots of assignments to complete in aid of revision and learning about the motor trade. they also provide revision sessions at the end of each day for those that need a little more time on specific tasks.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Unfortunately I do not feel that the qualification we are working towards doesnt help us out with our job roles because the vehicles we work on are completely different to those we are being trained on at college. only the basic principles affect our workplace as a lot of the heavy vehicle components arent used at my workplace

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • I had been to different schools to talk about the workplace and the working life to help them get an idea of what type of industry they would like to work in when they leave school. this was a good opportunity to give an insight about the industry of mechanics and vehicles.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Babcock to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Babcock do give a good opportunity for those that want to work in a specific industry on the vehicles we work on. they would be able to gain some new skills and meet some good people that have work here for years and learn skills from them that will help you in the trade

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Babcock?
  • the advice i would give is to show confidence and eagerness to work here. if you have a fair knowledge on vehicles then make sure you show that. if you dont then not to worry, you will get to learn on the job as you should do on any normal apprenticeship.
