  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Being a senior healthcare assistant my role on a day to day basis includes the administration of medication, assisting the kitchen staff at breakfast, dinner, tea and at drink times throughout the day, personal care to residents, assisting the care staff with their roles and helping with the induction of new starters

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • My course helped me open my eyes a bit more to how I can adapt my role to improve my work. This included a few different techniques and also how to deal and treat people that we don't normally have in our home. Being a home with mainly dementia patients it was good to learn about other illnesses we don't normally have.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • It was a bit overwhelming at the start having a new born baby, working 13hr shifts and being back in like an education frame of mind but after the 1st few months getting used to it and finding time and support from my tutor on how to create time it became quite enjoyable as the year went on

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Throught the year it was very well organised, I was in regular contact with my tutor whether it was through the app, phone, email or face to face. Everything was easy to find and follow and all relevant to my job and role, couldn't fault the course layout at all

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Quite a bit, there was a few of us doing the same course at the same time so we regularly sat down with our manager to discuss how we were doing, how we felt and if any support was needed. We had a space at work where we were able to meet and have face to face sessions with our tutor which helped

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • While you are doing your course you think "stop pestering me" but it's not untill you finish the course you think to yourself "you know what, I'm glad they where messaging me at 8am saying "have you done this yet"" because that's why there are there. Without that you wouldnt get your work done and fail. Anything I needed my tutor was there so thank you to him

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • After doing this course I feel I'm in a better position now than I was. It taught me about how heath care varies from homes, hospitals to in the community and how it works and how every place is different but we all provide the same thing and that is CARE

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Unfortunately for us staff there's not but it would help with team building though. We are in a lucky situation where most of the staff are quite close so we all get along and meet up outside of work when we are able to. We have a social activity room in our workplace for the residents where they can play games, craft and go on outings.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Longton Nursing & Residential Home to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Yeah definitely, all staff are friendly and easy to get on with from domestic down to the kitchen and care staff. Nursing staff and management are friendly and easy to approach and nothing to too hard for anyone and we all help each other. Uniform and full support and training is given

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Longton Nursing & Residential Home?
  • Do it! As long as you are willing to work hard and willing to learn there is plenty of opportunity to progress and gain experience and qualifications. Since I joined I have been on a course to learn how to drive a mini bus so I am able to take residents on outings, became a senior care assistant and also become a moving and handling trainer
