  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As an apprentice engineer working for Bam, my day to day activities can range from carrying out quality checks on site, setting out, marking levels and also helping in finding solutions to solve problems which have been encountered. As well as working on site, I have many duties within office such as creating asbuilts, creating permits to dig and moreover being in control of all hired equipment, ensuring they in good condition and also making sure they are within calibration dates.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • The perks of being an apprentice is the fact that you are classed as part of the team regardless of your current lack of experience and knowledge when it comes to your site placement. You are privileged to shadow highly skilled and qualified engineers who certainly help you improve and learn new skills. For me personally, I have learnt a variety of skills from improving my leadership and communication skills to learning new softwares such as 3D Civils.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Overall, I'm really happy with my apprenticeship programme, it's certainly something I have enjoyed due to the people around me on a daily basis. Something which really stands out personally for me, is the feeling of being valued and respected by every individual.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is structured well enough, the college block is very intense and the days are pretty compact with information, but considering the big step up in demand of work and intensity, the tutors provided have been amazing in helping overcome stress and potentially falling behind. Part of the programme structure is that when it comes to your college block you only focus on your college work and when its your site placement there is no college work involved, this is something which I certainly have found very effective.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Support received has been great! The apprenticeship team to my line managers, everybody involved, have always checked up on me on a regular basis ensuring I'm all well and have that I have no problems with anything.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The lectures and tutors made the long and intense days enjoyable, they always allocated time to raise questions, issues and time to ensure we understood new knowledge learnt. They have also been extremely beneficial when requiring help outside of college hours too.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • College did a great job in setting the foundations well enough for you to have a slight understanding of terminology, engineering principles & legislations, as to when you join your site placement. From my personal experience I have not used certain units/topics learnt from my college blocks. In order for me to improve personally, I would like to have learnt units which were more relevant to what we would use on site rather than them being pretty broad.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • My project offers you to take part in playing football every Wednesdays at the local sports Centre. We have had a few quizzes to join and participate in and moreover there have been webinars and professional discussions set up monthly in which we can join and enhance our knowledge.

  • Bam is a company with an immense network and more importantly a company with a great ethos. It looks after it employees pretty well. Also I'd certainly recommend Bam as they have given me the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills by allowing me to develop as an engineer on exciting projects around the country and meanwhile also supporting me financially while I learn
