  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since starting work with Kier with no experience in an office based role, I have developed new skills and terminology such as, producing detailed designs on CAD, knowing about standard and substandard barriers, learning about different types of surfaces/pavement, which is used when maintaining the roads and how to write reports.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • It is enjoyable and different most months. Some months you will get put onto schemes which take a while to complete and handover to the client, then other days you will get little tasks that dont take as long, but wither way the time seems to go quickly because you are always busy.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure of the programme i am on is pretty intense and consists of going into University quite often. I have to commute to Coventry University every 3 weeks for a week to complete my studies. The studies are organised lectures that we get timetables in advance for and every Wednesday we get half a day to do lectures with our tutors online via teams.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The business is good for helping when you are in need of something. For example, when i had to complete and pass some exams i had for the university i was struggling with some of the material in the subject and had to ask my colleagues that had previously been on the course for help. They made it easier for me to understand and i ended up passing my exams.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Coventry University are quite good for helping you out if you are in need of some support. They offer an online system for any help you need so you can pop in and out of that whenever you need some support with the work you are doing. I have done it myself and it has helped me with my exams.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • it has helped me out in developing good skills, for example, doing the maths has allowed me to understand certain elements of the work i do and work out things more efficiently. The drawings i work on involve working with dimensions on a daily basis so the maths is an important part of knowing

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes. Every week on a Thursday everyone from the office i work in get together and play a 7 a side game of football. The football is organised by myself and takes place in salford. It is a good chance to engage with peers from the office and you end up meeting new people most weeks.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Kier Group to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a nice place to work and has a nice environment to work in. Most people in the business are approachable and offer help to you whenever you ask for it. Since starting a few years ago not knowing anything about the job, i would say that i have come a long way and already learning a lot of advanced knowledge in engineering.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Kier Group?
  • Ensure that you are confident and show how much you want to excel your career and you will have a chance. I walked into the interview with quite a lot of work experience but not as much academic knowledge and Kier understood that and took me on, because i showed them how much i wanted to gain the knowledge side of the role.
