  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • four out of five working days is onsite, working towards my SVQ Level 3, and gaining valuable work experience within my section. I also day release an electronics HNC, and have so for the past two years. the first year I spent full time in college gaining a Performing Engineering Operations.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have gained many practical skills, IT skills, and problem solving for fault finding and repair. I have also grown in confidence and leadership qualities. additionally, I have learnt to work with both new and old equipment, and how to maintain it, and the important jobs each piece of equipment does.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy the programme, it has allowed to me find what role suits me, and it has pushed me to get the best out of me. I have gained new friends with the other apprentices and also the people in my section. every day is different and I enjoy that.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • the programme is very well structured, and allows individuals to move and experience different roles until they find the one that suits them. additionally the first year of college doing a PEO settles you into the apprenticeship, and allows you to learn the basics before being sent into the work place.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive constant support. there are monthly reviews, and welfare checks as well. on a quarterly basis, a apprentice progress report is also filled in by the apprentice masters, covering how well you have improved and of the section would offer a job. additionally, if you prove yourself future education is supported.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • as previously mentioned in the other question. everyone gets to do an NC, and if you prove yourself you can do an HNC or a HND or even a degree at university. additional, study leave is granted where necessary, and if you feel behind or in need of resources they are provided.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • i feel it allows me to perform better as the different qualifications are tailored to your role, so the college qualifications you achieve should directly reflect the work on site. I am in an electronics section, and was able to go to a different college to get the appropriate qualification.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • there are a range of diverse and inclusive networks at clyde which we are actively encouraged to join. this includes, but is not limited to,the young persons network, pride, disability and neurodisability and the women's network. there are also leisure facilities on site, such as a pool and gym.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Babcock to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • i have been an apprentice with babcock for three years now and it is an incredible opportunity for growth and learning. the site is a giant community and I definitely feel part of a big team. there is huge satisfaction completing projects and the hands on learning is the best.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Babcock?
  • apply yourself to the apprenticeship and get as much out of it as you can, and there are always opportunities for new learning and growth if you are willing to push. if there are extra courses to join, like PAT testing and 18th Edition do it, take all the experience you can.
