  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As an apprentice I rotate sections within my workplace every 3 months and therefore the tasks that I undertake vary. At this moment in time I have been mainly been carrying out electrical maintenances, ensuring that all components and equipment are healthy and ready to be used. This includes visual inspections and various testing techniques.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Over the course of my apprenticeship I have definitely learned some new skills. This was my first full time job after I had left school and showed me what working in industry was like. As a result, I have gained some vital communication skills, along with ability to work with others and learn from them.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoy my apprenticeship programme and have done for the two and a half years I have been participating in it. I have met some great new people over that course, whom I would happily call friends. As well as this, I wake up every morning not dreading the thought of work, but rather looking forward to seeing what I might learn today.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • I believe my apprenticeship is a very well structured programme. It was detailed on the job application and then again on my contract, showing me exactly how I progress through my 3-4 year apprenticeship. As well as this, over the first 2 years I have had regular updates regarding any changes to my apprenticeship programme and this has kept me well in the loop.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Over the course of my 4 year apprenticeship I have received great continuous support from my company and the colleges that have been chosen to educate me. Any queries I may have I always feel comfortable going to my line manager and asking. By doing so I always get the support I need and in the way that I need it.

  • The qualifications that I will achieve through my training provider will help me in my day to day job massively. • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Unfortunately, I am unaware of any such extra curricular activities that my company carry out and offer to us. I would not be against the idea of starting such a thing as I believe it could help work on work relationships and improve team working. However, it has not been a problem not having any such activities so far.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Babcock to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my 2 and a half years so far at Babcock. I believe that the training has been to a good standard, both on site and from our training provider and I have learned a great amount so far in my programme. I therefore believe it is a great platform for anyone to begin their career and would definitely recommend it.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Babcock?
  • I would definitely tell them to research a bit about the company and understand what it is they do. I would also tell them to research a bit about what they would be doing and what being an electrical fitter, for example, entails on the daily basis. With this information I believe they would be more equipped to starting life off in Babcock.
