  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Can vary day to day depending on what sections within the company you are working in. If working within fleet most of the work will be down a boat fixing various pieces of equipment or carrying out overhauls. If working on the estates side the work will be on the buildings within the establishment; doing various jobs

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Learned may new skills aswell as getting to see things I never thought I would. I have also developed more on my original skills academically through the Nc at the college especially my maths skills as a lot of the subjects required a high level to complete the units given to us.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy getting to move about within the company as I get to meet a lot of people as well as seeing how each department works. Some sections are better than others but just depends where the work is because most will get their quiet times and busy times. I obviously like the busy times as makes the day fly in

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The overall structure of the program is really well organised and structured. Again it all comes down the the sections internally in the company and how they are organised some are better than others. In some sections they assign you a personal fitter who you can go on jobs and see if they problems and some sections don’t do this so you have to keep going looking for jobs.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • They company are really supportive of the apprentices within and provided you can just get the head down and get on with the work you can normally get anything you need. Financially they take extremely good care of the apprentices as it’s one of the best paid apprenticeship going in the uk. Which in turn makes a lot of young people interested also the work that we carry out is interested and can’t find that same work with any other company

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The college is normally really supportive of the students. However due to the whole covid pandemic the working from home makes it harder to get the help you need as you can’t just ask the lecturer you need to send an email then wait on them replying to it

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • There are some subjects that help in the actual job role however there are some I feel aren’t really relevant to what I am doing on site. Saying that it make come in handy one day to know it but will need to wait and see what the future holds

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yeah there are normally many different activities that’s can be done such as the stem events to help get younger people interested in an engineering career; this gives them an insight to what it would involve day to day for them. Internally in the sections sometimes they arrange days out to go to play football etc

  • 9a. Would you recommend Babcock to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It’s a really good company to work for with lots of progression internally, if getting the work done you will be rewarded as the company likes to promote within. Also the work carried out can’t be done anywhere else in the uk as it’s all specialist jobs on equipment people would normally never see. The company also pay employees really well.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Babcock?
  • Just to be confident when applying and during the interview stage as the interview are really rather informal with down to earth people carrying them out. I was really nervous at mine and nearly never got it but did in the end so yeah just be relaxed and It such be fine!
