  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Bid coordinator, I work on writing bid proposals, assisting with strategic decision making and business development planning. I liaise generally with senior leaders or board level colleagues to ensure that the business bids the strategic opportunities. Within my bid work, i coordinate activities to ensure that our deliverables are delivered on time and to the correct quality

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • In terms of internal training, i have better understood finance and specifically accounting. I have gained good project management skills throughout my time at babcock and during the MSC Apprentice programme i am improving my human resource, international business, governance and operations management knowledge. All of which will assist me in my future endeavours

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The programme is informative, insightful and relatively well delivered. It covers topics that are relevant to my day job and for my future aspirations as i plan to climb the career ladder into senior leadership. In terms of organisation and course communication, this is the least enjoyable aspect - as frequently I am left none the wiser to what the future of the programme looks like.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • As eluded to in my previous response - the course content is well organised and structured. We have been given a timetable and we have stuck to it. However, i feel the organisation of the programme as a whole could be better. For example, in the next 12 months i will need to submit a dissertation for my MSC - I don't know yet when exactly it is due. This information would be helpful to plan my work life and personal life going forward.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support from my employer is very strong and i have only experienced positive responses from my line managers and colleagues. They frequently ask for feedback and are supportive when i have lectures or calls to attend regarding the programme. I cannot fault the business as all, very supportive thus far

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Fairly limited. We have support from a dedicated point of contact within the organisation. We are empowered to reach out to this point of contact whenever necessary. I would suggest that the sessions with this point of contact are not always productive. However, that said, the personnel running the programme are generally quick to respond and do give helpful feedback.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • As my role is quite strategy focussed, the heavy amount of strategy content is very beneficial. Similarly, i work in an international team that is very diverse. The programme has covered international business and people around the world. It has helped me to understand cultural differences and better appreciate how to manage these.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • These are hard to come by due to covid - however prior to this pandemic there were plenty of opportunities for networking and extra curricular activities. Perhaps a reflection point is could this have been more proactively managed during the pandemic. But otherwise, being based in bristol with occasional trips to london provided good networking opportunities

  • 9a. Would you recommend Babcock to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The business is dynamic and supportive of talent - especially those that have come through the graduate programme. Management are supportive of extra curricular activies and training. The MSC programme is another key benefit, that sets it apart from competition. The organisational structure presents opportunities to network with senior leaders also

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Babcock?
  • Coming through the graduate process, the advice to other graduates would be to ensure that you show the guiding principles of the business in your personality / what you deliver at interview. Please also be genuine, at assessment centres there were too many candidates who treated it like an episode of the apprentice. Otherwise onboarding is clear and easy. Plenty of opportunities to expand.
