  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a trainee journalist undertaking placements across different programmes on the BBC. This has included Radio 4's Today Programme, Panorama and will include Newsnight. I have been tasked with coming up with stories, researching them and identifying the correct news agenda as well as creating content for digital platforms.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed new skills using software such as Final Cut Pro and VCS. I have also strengthened my journalistic skills in general and have adapted them to a broadcast environment. The BBC is a great place for young journalists to enhance their existing skills and develop new ones.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I love my traineeship and could not imagine myself in a different role. This role is perfect for someone at the beginning of a journalism career and I have been well supported throughout this year. I see myself having a long career at the BBC and hope to enjoy it as much as I enjoy my current role.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Due to Covid-19, the structure has been a bit strange this year though those in charge have made it work. There is usually an entire cohort of trainees, though this year it has just been me due to Covid. However, I have always been clear about what role I am expected to be doing and the dates that things are due to happen.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive plenty of support from my employer, with both my managers, my mentor and the bosses of my placement willing to communicate and support. There is also a confidential Employee Assistance Programme that can be used for more serious issues such as mental health and grief, if I ever need someone to lend an ear.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The BBC is both my employer and my training provider - my traineeship does not have any formal qualifications, but in helping me to become a more rounded journalist I receive plenty of support. Placements take place across different outlets such as radio, TV and online with managers on each being entirely supportive.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • As mentioned above, there is no formal qualification. However, the training that is provided helps me become more accustomed to the way that the BBC works and it is this familiarity that helps me to become more effective. The training is extensive and covers everything you could possibly need to succeed.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are not extra curricular activities that I am aware of, though how much of this is down to Covid-19 I am unaware of. There are networking activities such as zoom meetings for staff across the BBC and webinars that feature prominent guest speakers. These have been useful to meet colleagues across different departments.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I love my job and think that anyone else who wants to work in journalism would to. It is one of the biggest companies in the country and that comes with pressure, but also an immense sense of reward. I have been exceptionally supported throughout my trainee scheme and believe anyone would be.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
  • Make sure to read the job criteria and signpost that you have this criteria - it is there for a reason and tells you exactly what they are looking for. Don't be afraid to make an application because of the size of the company and be sure to reach out to people for help if you need it. There are plenty of former trainees and apprentices on Twitter who will be happy to answer questions if you reach out to them
