  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • On a day to day basis I get involved with the development team. This involved being set technical tasks and working with others in the team. Being an agile project we work closely with the customer updating them every sprint. I also do training daily to further current and relevant knowledge.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since starting at Roke I have been on one project and the joining program. This program went through a number of different subjects and not only exposed us to the different parts of the business but let us to practical work. Since joining the project I learn whilst doing with the other developers and continue doing training courses.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • My program is very enjoyable. Allowing apprentices to not only work on customer projects but interact with them as well. Interacting with other developers is also very helpful as some of them have also joined as an apprentice or graduate. The Roke community supports you and are always open for questioning.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure of being an apprentice is brilliant. I not only have a buddy and line manager but a mentor as well. These all communicate along with the university as well to make sure I have the correct support. When working on a project the skrum mater and project manager will make sure task are assign to you.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • There are a number of ways I am supported, my line manager will communicate with me along with monthly 1 to 1 meetings. I also have a buddy for any questions and a mentor who oversees my growth. The mentor will also be in contact with Winchester university allowing me to learn and work to the maximum.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The university have lots of resources available online and also record all lectures. This means that I can watch a lecture if I've forgotten anything. The lecturers are always open for questions and we can message them on teams with any concerns. There is also an FAQ page where questions are recorded so others gain that info as well.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The work at University is related to my role but it's not direct, however I am currently working in my first year and just in that short amount of time it has progressed. So I have no doubt that in the future it will continue to relate more and more.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes Roke offers lots of extra-curricular activities some running at lunch and others in the evening. Sadly because of covid and home working some of these have been cancelled especially our yearly events. Having said that lots still meet online, I attended the Christian Fellowship which meets weekly at lunch.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Roke to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a great way to grow your knowledge whilst working on the job but the most important fact is that your working on influential critical work. This makes working for Roke very enjoyable. Having the one day for University and gaining your degree whilst working is an irresistible offer.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Roke?
  • I would advise others applying to Roke to just be themselves. Roke always value the person not only their capabilities so being yourself will enable to to show yourself in the best light. People who are hard working and interested make the best employees as they will grow and deliver.
