  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role as an aeronautical engineer apprentice involves the working for T 1 and T 2 wheels and breaks. This involves scheduled maintenance of them on a daily basis and we get a number of different wheels from the aircraft each day. We have to record the ins and the outs so that everything can be traced.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • With my time in on the RAF base working for Babcock international group, I have learnt and improves all my skills involving problem solving, communication skills and the way the company works with different types of commands and abbreviations. Theses are used a lot of the time on site and prove to be a skill which needs to be learnt on site.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy every aspect working for Babcock international group. I enjoy the work I do and the mindset that not many people get to do this job that I do on a day to day basis. The main aspect I enjoy is getting to learn why we do the job we do and getting hands on experience.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme which has been set up by Babcock international group had many cohorts go through the program and they have had a lot of good experiences in setting up programs like this. They have considered everything through ensuring we have all the necessary information needed to complete tasks etc...

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The support I receive from my employer is invaluable. With the people in the training department offering anything to help me with studies and information to give me the training I need to become a qualified engineer and to all the people who I work with offering tips and information on how to do the job, I couldn’t be happier.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification that I am working towards has all the relevant information and resources I need to become a good aeronautical engineer technician and thus for making me a good engineer in the work force. Any bit of information being big or small goes a long way in this industry.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are different types of things we can get involved with. The main one being that we all get to sign up to the station gym located just down the road from the work place which is very hands and a reasonable price for the year. We also get to sign up to things such as health and safety briefs to see what else happens on the site.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Babcock to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Babcock are a dedicated work force striving for excellence and want to improve every aspect of the business and to also develop young engineers, like myself and then enrol them into the work force whilst continuing with learning to become further developed engineers after the apprentice programme. Babcock are an excellent work force to work for and develop with.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Babcock?
  • I would tell them to work on themselves and their skills so that if they are eventually successful in an apprenticeship programme, they are already at a confident level with approaching people as an engineering work force can be boisterous, which in my opinion is good for morale. I would also say to ask as many questions as possible as each answer you get will be with you forever!
