  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Recently I have spent my days organizing and overseeing facilities changes related to the new automation technology we are implementing in the warehouse. That includes contacting contractors, comparing quotes, assessing health and safety requirements, ordering equipment and a multitude of other activities. Aside from this however, DHL arranges weekly calls with other apprentices and graduates which help us see new opportunities and network.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • So so many. The most useful have been one associated with my longer term goals such as understanding the technical side of things such as electrical engineering, data availability and artificial intelligence. However, there have been plenty more that are more linked to my role, such as route planning, sustainability and negotiation.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Massively, aside from when I worked with my father (Landscaping outdoors, something I love but few career prospects) this is the most enjoyable job I have ever had by far. Just having people around me who care about my progress in the role and as a person, as well as the variety of daily tasks, gives me great job satisfaction and I wake up genuinely excited to go to work almost every day.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • This is one area I hesitate to give 10/10 for as when I first arrived at my site I did feel a little unguided and didn't know what to aim towards. However, once I met the right people who gave me the right support, I understood what the expectations were and how I could mold them to suit my aspirations.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • As much as I ask for in all honesty, if I wanted to I could completely fill my schedule with calls with VPs and coaches alike. Everybody at DHL wants to see myself and my fellow apprentices succeed and its very apparent once you begin to reach out for support. On top of this the Emerging Talent team conduct regular check ins to prompt this.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Not really any need for them to support with my university studies as Aston covers that well. DHL does ensure that we all get enough time to complete our assignments and progress our academic learning. In addition, DHL has MyTalentWorld which provides extra training for us, all very good quality too!

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Currently, it doesn't benefit me a whole lot as I'm working in a warehouse and the assignment is on transport, on the other hand, we are just about to begin a warehouse module and it looks like I'll be able to get a bunch of useful information from it.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • No, not during Covid-19 and lockdowns as I'm sure you'll all understand. We are currently working within the social committee to organize a BBQ and cooking classes post lockdown so that should be very interesting! DHL is keen for us to socialize outside of work however they do respect that not everyone works 24/7.

  • 9a. Would you recommend DHL to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I've already recommended DHL to some of my friends who are looking at starting their own careers due to the fact that I wholeheartedly believe the logistics and supply chain industries will continue to grow in the coming decades, and the technology and sustainability elements surrounding DHL make it the ideal employer.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to DHL?
  • I would recommend that they show an eagerness to learn as well as a capacity to collaborate with others. The very nature of working as a third party logistics provider requires an individual to think more as a collective or team, and be able to negotiate and collaborate towards an ideal solution almost daily.
