  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I’m an Openreach Service Delivery engineer and as such, front-facing Staff. I currently provide and maintain the copper telephone and broadband network, helping people get their lines up and running and fault finding against poor telephony or broadband service.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have taken so much from this past year, from basic DIY skills to a new found confidence in both driving skill and social interactions! I’ve found that most aspects of my life have been improved by what I’ve learnt and been through, not just how to get a copper line working!

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I’ve enjoyed it immensely. Everybody I’ve met within the apprenticeship staff have been encouraging and engaged and on a personal level, incredibly friendly and understanding.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Everything was set out for me with clear and attainable goals. I knew what was expected from me right from the start and knew where I was meant to be at any given point.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My immediate line managers and Patch leads are all understanding and treat each new engineer with equal time and respect.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My apprenticeship coach made it clear that he was on the other end of the phone whenever he was needed, failing that, I could always expect a prompt email response.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Protocol and network quality have been hammered into me over the course of the training that I am now rarely unsure of how to get a task completed. It’s assured me and given me confidence that I know and can do what it takes to competently complete a task.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are networking events, the most recent had been a virtual pub quiz, organised for the entire East Anglia patch. There are always events and invitations being sent around for awards evenings etc

  • 9a. Would you recommend BT to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I have done and continue to. I’ve been trusted with tools and knowledge and given all of the skills necessary for the job, let alone dealing with the public in general. I feel like part of a community within the organisation and there are so many practical and social skills to be gained.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • Keep at it. Show a positive and dedicated attitude where you can. It’s not as hard or complicated as you think it is. Approach people and seek to gain some of their knowledge.. If you put the effort in and keep your chin up, they’re likely to understand where you’re coming from.
