  • My daily role consists of giving formal instructions to the sub-contractors and estimating how much these instructions will cost the company. I am also involved in meetings to do with the project.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since I have been with the company I have been put on a lot of training courses. Such as H&S courses right through to being taught how to use the system at work. I have developed my communication skills as well as my time management, managing work and college.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the programme I am on. The team I am working in are all very nice people and great to work with. The company culture is hard working while making sure everyone is healthy both in mind and body. I am happy to be working while undertaking my college work and I have colleagues around me for support.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • There is a good structure in place, I know when I am going to college and when I am on placement. By splitting the college and being on site so each are in blocks it allows me to focus my attention on them separately, meaning I can produce my best work.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive a lot of support and guidance during both the college and placement environment. There are always people to talk to, whether that be a tutor while I'm at college or a colleague at work, they are happy to help me with the problems I have and want to get the best out of me.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I receive a lot of guidance from the Leeds College of Building. The tutors are there to help me with each coursework entry at each level during the apprenticeship I, not only pass, but succeed the grades I desire. This is the same during the distance learning I am currently having to do while being on placement.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • In my opinion the qualifications and the training provide me with enough skills to be able to fulfill my role. The college course at Leeds College of Building not only allows me to gain an understanding of what is expected and the next steps to become a QS. The qualifications given to me are the same as a university graduate.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • At college we had organised meals for the BAM apprentices as well as group events like go-karting and paintballing, this included a Christmas do before we finished our college block. During our college block we, as apprentices, were living together we were all on the same level of the course, which not only helped us with studies but it helped us socialize with everyone. Whilst at work I have been on a couple of apprentice events as well as work social events.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAM to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The reason I would recommend the BAM apprenticeship scheme is because the skills and the experiences I have gained from working at the company. Not only have I made some very good friends that come from around the country I have gained a variety of skills that come through scheme being so versatile.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAM?
  • To those that are applying to the scheme I would say be enthusiastic about it and be willing to learn, the saying you only get out what you put in springs to mind as ask questions and work hard. Everyone at the company and at college wants to see you succeed and it is a massive opportunity to be heavily involved in the construction industry. BAM are an understanding company and know going through the application process is not easy so don't be nervous for the interviews and assessment day BAM is there to help.
