1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:

Working as a business management analyst in the communications part at SLA is a varied role. I look at the planning and strategy of the communications team, including any clashes of communications, risk management, measurement, business continuity and the transformation of our team following the merger in 2017.

2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?

After starting my degree I have found it really interesting to develop on existing skills, with the added bonus of having the knowledge from the theory learnt at Uni. Everyday I am developing core life skills such as teamwork, communication and time management.

3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?

I really enjoy the programme as I find mixing studying with working is enhancing my ability to absorb the information. i find that having a supportive manager and team has been key in allowing me to make the most of this opportunity.

4. How well organised/structured is your programme?

The programme is well organised. I think the uni visits are sometimes not as beneficial as they could be, often discussing very particular details of coursework, rather than a discussion that could help deepen my overall understanding.

5. How much support do you receive from your employer?

I receive a good amount of support from my employer. i think having a manager that is happy to give you time in work to complete uni work is very important as it shows they understand the link and are supportive of the qualification.

6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?

RGU provides a high amount of support, with regular dial in calls, regular catch ups with the uni, on site visits and constant access to the course lecturer if required. furthermore we have an online forum where we can all discuss our thoughts.

7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?

I think as a business management analyst completing a degree in business management has been very well matched. everyday when i am completing my uni work i can see relevance with work i am carrying out in the office and work to apply that knowledge.

8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)

At SLA, there is a young persons network which links together young people from all across the business and organises social, educational and charitable activities. I have been involved in a range of these activities and find the network great.

9a. Would you recommend abrdn to a friend?

Yes

9b. Why?

Standard Life Aberdeen is somewhere i would recommend to a friend, as a lot of my friends are of an age where they are considering option for the future. It is a great place to start of your career as personal development is a key focus.

10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to abrdn?

Be yourself! It is really important to show who you are, as this is how recruiters can assess if you would be the right fit for the organisation. It also allows you to consider whether SLA is somewhere you would like to work
