  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Providing and repairing telephone and broadband services for service providers and their customers. I will sign on in the morning picking up tasks for the day and carry them out to the best of my ability. Communicating and sending jobs to the right department, if I can not complete a task, so the job can be completed

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt new skills in regards to the workings of telephone and broadband service, broadening my existing mechanical and electrical knowledge. It has broadened my customer facing and communication experience, to get the right information from various sources, to help complete jobs and customer needs. I have also developed my problem/fault finding skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed the program and love the role I am doing in the business. I have a great group of colleagues around me and always willing to help each other to get a job done. I also enjoy travelling and meeting lots of different people be that colleagues or customers.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well structured. There is always help at the end of a phone or face to face. Set days are given solely for carrying out work on your apprenticeship, where you have a dedicated tutor to help you along your way. On top of this experienced engineers are at hand to progress your apprenticeship also.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The level of support is of a very high quantity. You have a manager who is purely a manager of new recruits to assist with completing your apprenticeship. On top of this there are patch leads of just the new recruit team. They are out in the field for assistance and guidance. On top of this there are coach visits to assess good points and areas that may require more focus.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • As with the above the support is high. You are given all the tools and information for you to progress with your apprenticeship qualifications and have multiple resources, such as phone contacts, links to information and physical contacts, that allow you to confidently progress with your qualification.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The modules and training really help to increase your knowledge and confidence in what you are doing. That teamed with the assistance given from all sources really does provide you with excellent confidence and morale in the role or task you are carrying out. It is a good mix of work and study.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are numerous ways to get involved within the company and colleagues. Special events are held throughout the year where you can happily join or attend for no cost. These can be ways of gaining more knowledge of the job you do or the future of the company. Internal team events are also arranged through the year some self funded and some company funded.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Openreach is a fantastic company to work for. Personally for me I enjoy visiting different places and meeting new people. But in the respect of the company, the level of support, assistance and detail of care is one of the best you can experience in employment within a business. Where your needs are of the up most importance.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BT?
  • The biggest advice is to not expect to be great straight away. The role is a huge learning curve that only improves over experience. At first some things may not make sense, then all of a sudden something clicks and your confidence and knowledge will grow and grow. This is where the love of the jobs really hits.
