I am an apprentice solicitor in the Employment team at Burges Salmon. I have a similar role to that of a trainee solicitor. I assist qualified lawyers with meetings, calls, drafting documents and liaising with court. I also have a few of my own cases that I manage with my supervisors support.
General professionalism - e.g. office etiquette and how to talk to clients. Growth in confidence in how I present myself. I have developed my legal knowledge and learnt how the law applies in practice. Built on my presentation skills
Thoroughly enjoy it - it's challenging but very rewarding
Very well structured - see BS apprentice page on the website. The structure has very much developed since I joined in 2016. Being the first year to do this apprenticeship, we have to some extent been the 'guinea pigs' but this comes with it's advantages as well as disadvantages - it is great to help shape the programme for future apprentices.
Fantastic supervisor, good internal relationships between other apprentices and numerous HR contacts to go to at any time.
Fantastic student manager. All learning is done online so a slightly different format - but tutors are accessible via email and AdobeConnect.
To be a successful lawyer it is vital to have the requisite legal knowledge that we are receiving from BPP. I think this combined with the practical hands on work experience is invaluable.
Plenty of sports teams to get involved with (although not my thing). However I always attend firm wide and department socials, and we do out own apprentice social once a month
Yes
Fantastic way to start your legal career, a friendly environment and a challenging role
