  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Supervising the store either by running it when manager is not here or supporting him to do so when he is on site. Varying from lots of different tasks each day from dragging in delivery, working frozen, tills, HD Packer a whole variety of job roles each and every day and each day is different

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Learnt a few things such as the theory’s and who came up with them for example, belbins theory. The types of leadership styles that there are and how I can use these types of styles to implement into my every day tasks while I’m working to improve my self each day

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I didn’t enjoy the programme at all if I’m honest, it was a waste of a year as it could of easily been squished into 6 months. There was a lot of coursework to the build up of the final tests which I think was very excessive and It wasn’t useful to me at all

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It was organised terribly, I had 4 different trainers within the first 2 months of starting the course. Each time I had a face to face visit I’d be given more and more hand outs to “support me and my work” which made it harder to understand what the exactly was the correct thing to do for the work as each meeting you’d be told something new. It wasn’t organised nor structured well

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I received support from my manager for sure and my area manager was happy to answer any questions and pass on people’s details higher up in the business that could help me gain more knowledge for my final tests. But Iceland as a whole not so much. But overall not to bad

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The first 3 trainers didn’t know what they were doing and how to structure the face to face meetings and the guidance info that they gave to me was [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] but my final trainer was great, she was fun bubbly and always had a smile on her face, whenever I was unsure on something I’d drop her a text or email and she’d always try to get back to me that day.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Maybe it’s just this store or maybe it’s me personally but I don’t think the apprenticeship has aided me in development of my role as I was already very knowledgeable and upskilled as it was in my role so I was comfortable with what I had to do to become a supervisor as I was pretty much doing all the things a supervisor done already I just didn’t have the title or the Paycheck for it

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Occasionally we will arrange to all do something as a team to basically build the team up but nothing set in stone. But we are a small team/ store so it’s hard to arrange time to go out all together and do things because you know Iceland takes over your life 24/7

    6/10

  • 9a. Would you recommend Iceland to a friend?
  • No

  • 9b. Why?
  • Iceland always goes on about how they strive for work and home balance and how they value their employees, but week after week the hours Instore are dropped, everything gets tighter but Iceland still expect the same high standards from you. So the workload gets constantly put onto managements backs and then this causes stress, sickness, and low morale in the workplace! It’s a joke

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Iceland?
  • Get in to the business, show them that you are a solid fast paced worker. Push yourself and be the one to approach your manager about progressing up the ladder. Showing determination and drive is a big factor within Iceland. If you show you can work fast and hard and to the standards they want then they will put time into you for sure. But don’t let a company ruin your social life
