  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My Role is an FCO apprentice working for Cadent gas, the day to day role includes attending outside and internal gas escapes as an emergency response. We working with a set District to attend gas escaoes and safe guard life and property. The role also includes some planned metering and maintenance work aswel as emergency response.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Since working for Cadent gas I have developed and learnt a variety off new skills. These include a manner off practical uses off tools and industry specific equipment. I have also developed a great deal off communication and team wokring skills working with the public and large groups off colleagues.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my apprenticeship programme very much as every day can be so different and can provide a new challenge. I enjoy the working environment and culture surrounding the company. I also enjoy learning new skills and developing my current skill set which I get plenty off opportunity to do.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The planning and organising is very well handled as there are a lot off apprentices over the different schemes to deal with. We always have good hotels organised for our training. Over the two years the training plan is quite extensive and there are lots off aspects to cover. All training is very professionally presented which is a representation off how well planned it is.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I feel I receive lots off support from my employer as they are always there for advice and to help with any needs, extra training and guidance is always offered if you feel it is required and they are very easy to speak to. Support and guidance is provided from both training and on patch managers so there are plenty off options should you need it.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We have lots off support from our training providers when attending specific courses and training towards our qualifications, with our training group being off a small size plenty off support can be offered to each individual to ensure that the training is understood. Then additional support and training can be offered if required

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that my training towards my qualifications helps me to preform better within my chosen job role as it has provided me with the specific training a skill set required to become an FCO engineer. The qualification has also developed my confidence and people skills to allow me to work confidently and professionally within the public.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are some social activities that take place with cadent, these include events like charity events, fundraising within communities and on the districts you also have engagements days where engineers have the opportunity to come together to have a social day doing events like foot golf, walking or even football.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • From my experience over the previous two years on my apprenticeship scheme I would with out doubt recommend the emergency first call Operative scheme to a friend as the opportunities to learn are endless and the scheme is so well planned and set out it suitable for anyone who wishes to develop into a career.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Cadent Gas?
  • My advice to anyone who was wishing to apply for Cadent gas would be to make sure that you take the most off your opportunity and try to sell your self to the best off your ability to help you gain a career within the company because as they say it is a job for life and the company benefits are fantastic.
