  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My day to day role is as a Digital Technician, essentially I provide support to the in house editors who are cutting shows. I'll help set up the edit, maintain the project and help do the End of Edit. I'll also help with any issues they find with their software/hardware.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I didn't know anything about the industry before starting the apprenticeship and have now brought up my skills so that I can go out as an edit assistant once the apprenticeship is over. I also didn't know how to use Apple Macs so had to learn to use completely different hardware.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy every day of my apprenticeship. The people teaching me I consider close friends now, and have learnt valuable skills that I'll keep with me for the rest of my career in tv. I was immediately made part of the team and any concerns I have are immediately dealt with.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My placement is well organised and my work training has been superb. However the college training lacks structure as we have different teachers every week who don't talk to each other about what they teach us so we end up covering the same basic skills over and over again.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive so much support from my employer. I have several different managers who constantly touch base with me if we don't see each other in a while and go out of their way to make sure I'm comfortable and still learning and enjoying the apprenticeship. If there's anything I want to learn they'll immediately put things in place for me to learn.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We receive a lot of support, and get a lot of people from the college come in to talk to us to see what we're learning and if it's helping us/ we enjoy it. However, not a lot comes out from our concerns and they aren't dealt with.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It has taught me some basic things, but the qualification is taught to us through a training provider that also teaches other people on different media apprenticeships so everything is blanketed to cover every ones learning. I have a very post-production technical heavy apprenticeship and not a lot has been aimed at me from the college.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are lots of extra activities that I've got involved in at work, there are always events on that I can attend, from womens events, to tech events and the office get togethers that we have when people leave or its Christmas. or even at the end of a hard week.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The BBC has put me miles ahead into my career path from where I would have been without it. I've been given a massive training effort which will help me secure other jobs in the future. None of this I would have gotten from going to Uni. It's just great.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
  • Don't just apply saying that you're creative. Everyone can be creative. You need to prove that you can be, prove you can create things, prove that your thinking can be diverse and inclusive. But most importantly be yourself, you're more likely to be employed if you're coming off as genuine than robotic, just saying things to get the job.
