  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I'm currently in the Bigger Picture team and help manage the Sky Ocean Rescue website, uploading new content and searching for staff to contribute as a guest writer as a part of the content contributors programme I launched. I also help manage partnerships, specifically Premier League, supporting their cup trials to pass on plastic and their Primary Stars programme, educating young people on the plastic issue.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I believe I've developed my networking skills and have improved my techniques for work load management. However, I feel I have primarily built upon my existing skills rather than developing new ones. I am keen to better expand my knowledge of marketing and get more hands on with the area.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Currently, the apprenticeship has been primarily work based learning with very little specific learning to complete the course. Because of this, the programme has felt unstructured and not organised at all. Everything work based has been incredibly beneficial and I know I have gained experience that I would never have received if I had gone to uni.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Poorly. I cannot say I have spent anywhere near 20% of my time learning currently which is disappointing. Any learning resources I have received haven't been at all relevant to marketing and those that have been - I sourced myself. There is minimal support from the provider in the development and progression of the apprentices.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Employer support has been good. They've helped us source a better provider and are helping us to secure a degree apprenticeship after completing our current course. We are treated as regular employees and are not excluded from anything at all. Communication is often minimal, leaving us in the dark at times.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Next to none. Development coach visits are infrequent, and due to their part-time nature, we often can't seek support when needed. They clearly have little training and often rely on us to direct their visits and discussion content. Disappointing to say the least. Looking forward to out new provider.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It hasn't. We were training for a PR and Comms qualification which was not relevant to the marking role at all, making it difficult to apply our learning and get experience needed to complete the qualification. Would not recommend. Glad to be moving to a qualification in digital marketing.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • MANY! Sky offer a number of networks to sign up to (Women@Sky, Multiculture@Sky, LGBT+@Sky, Parents@Sky, Healthandmind@Sky), there are many social events (both professional and casual). All of which are available for apprentices too with some being apprentice specific so that you're still able to develop in a comfortable way.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Sky to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Despite the issues with provider. Sky offers young people a stepping stone into their careers and help support them with additional training online, workshops and many other opportunities for personal development. For example, the apprenticeship lets you explore three different areas of marketing to help you better understand the business area and which you prefer.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Sky?
  • Do your research. To do well at Sky you need to know Sky, it's history and where it's going next. Without basic knowledge of the business, it'll take you a while to catch up. Be yourself, Sky is all about inclusivity and diversity show you should show them how you're different and what that offers to the business.
