  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Performing routine maintenance tasks on Manchester airports baggage system. Emergency breakdowns are also responded to when they happen. Shadowing a fully qualified engineer gives a chance to learn new skills whilst on the job and learn proper techniques for performing set tasks. It also give them opportunity to learn how particular jobs are undertaken.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt lots of new skills whilst on the job. Because it is an airport where I work it is very interesting to see all of the different systems and machinery that is used, learning to fix all of them has opened my eyes to the amount of work that goes into keeping an airport running.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is very well organised. I know exactly where I am going to be when I get in in the morning. We have been given a roster for the next few weeks with set departments we will be shadowing and this helps to plan ahead and find out more about the different sections.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer is very supportive and provides any information or equipment that is needed. Any questions about certain things to do with work are always answered with thorough detail. It is great to have this because such a dynamic work place can sometimes get confusing and having mangers that have been in the same position as I am really helps.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • My training provider is very supportive and gives all the information that I need. They are really good with providing resources and places to research. The workshops and different learning areas have given me a great opportunity to learn new skills and develop on pre existing ones. The tutors and trainers are all very knowledgable and helpful.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The skills that I learn at college transfer into work and it helps me to understand what is happening in work when I haven’t been in that situation before. It means I don’t have to ask as many questions when on the job and I can focus more on what is happening at the time.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We have northern powerhouse events in Manchester which allows apprentices from different areas to discuss issues they may be having or any changes they feel may be needed. Our managers attended the last one and it gives them a perspective on our point of view. It also allows for a chance to network and meet different people from different companies.

  • 9a. Would you recommend MAG Airports to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • MAG is a great place to do an apprenticeship and work because it is so different to everywhere else. There are no days the same when you get put with the different sectors and being in such a different environment makes working so much more fun. Everyone is very helpful and willing to help you learn new skills.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to MAG Airports?
  • MAG is very different to other work places, especially for apprentices so it is important to ask as many questions as possible and try to learn about the company because there is a lot more that goes into running an airport than meets the eye. There are lots of different sectors so it would be good to look at the different departments and see which one suits your skill set and interests best.
