  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • One week a month I’m a studio runner, this is where I get all the props onto the set on time, I set dress for links and even help out through puppeteering or holding something steady in shot. For the rest of the month I’m in the office, this is where I open all birthday cards sent in, organise them, go through all the emails, complaints and queries. I even look after guest for bed time stories and do studio tours around Doc10 for children.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I’ve learnt how to read a call sheet, what the different camera shots are called, I’ve learnt everyone’s job role within production, giving me a better understand of how media works. I’ve learnt how to use a camera in my college weeks and how to edit the footage too!

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I’ve loved the programme I’m on, I came into this apprentiship with no previous knowledge or experience within the media industry and I’ve managed to learn so much on the job. Ive gained so much experience too, I’ve worked on location in a studio and the office.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It could be organised a bit better, I feel like when e travel to college in Chesham it’s very last minute, we know the dates however these have changed numerous times days before we plan to go and we never know where we’re staying until a couple of days before we leave.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My line manager is AMAZING! She’s so supportive and encourages me to get experience anywhere I can when it’s possible. We get check up emails for our apprentice managers however from them being located so far away from us there’s very little they can do for us.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We receive very little from all spring media when we are not in Chesham. They are very slow to reply when I email them I usually have to email them 2-3 times in 2 weeks to finally get a reply, therefore they give no support when we’re at college.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel like my apprentice qualification has provided me with all the important experience needed for me to perform better in my role. From me learning what a call sheet is, on my training week in Birmingham, I was able to understand and read my call sheet when I was on location.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Well we have socials, so last night the art department planned ninja academy, and they invited me, was so much fun and it was good to socialise with people outside of work and get to know them on a personal level. There’s always nights out like the Christmas night out and a summer social night out which is good fun too!

  • 9a. Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It’s such a better alternative then university, the experience I’ve gained as an apprentice I would have never got at uni. I’ve had support from my line manger and have found it really easy to fit in and know the role without any previous experience. It doesn’t feel like a job it’s so much fun and I’ve lived every second of it!

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
  • It doesn’t matter about any previous experience or qualifications you have or don’t have, it’s all about you, how you come across, are you likeable? Easy to talk to? Have good ideas for the BBC? Do you have a good attitude? And have a passion for TV let that come across in your interviews. Don’t forget to back up every point you make about yourself with a life experience too!
