  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Acting as a software engineer in my placement team. This involves attending daily stand up meetings, writing code that meets the set out criteria, testing the code, and then performing code reviews with other members of the team. Time can be spent learning about the technologies being used as well.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Throughout the scheme you are sent on different training courses to further your skills, and you are also allowed to request to go on different courses that are relevant to your current placement. In your placement team members also provide you with training, and time is given for you to research skills by yourself.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • Very enjoyable, the bbc has a good relaxed work culture, which is open and tries to be accessible to all. Work hours are flexible so you can get in and leave at what times suit your travel needs. You do not feel pressurised on the work you do and most people are happy to be there.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Quite well organised you go on a number of different rotations throughout the scheme which tries to give you exposure to lots of different areas of the company, so that you can get different experiences and find out which area suits you the most. Mentors are provided who you can meet up with regularly.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Whilst in your placement teams you have regular one to one meetings with the placement team manager. You also get assigned a buddy in your team who you can work with closely and ask any questions you have too. There is also a scheme manager who you meet with throughout the year.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • You don't receive any qualifications whilst on the grad scheme but you are offered the opportunity to go on training courses which give you real world industry experience. You receive as much support as you require from talking to your assigned buddy in your placement or your assigned mentor.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • From taking part in the scheme it has helped me realise the different areas within the BBC and it puts you at more of an advantage than other employees who have just worked in the one specific place. You also gain contacts which is helpful if you need to ask questions for different areas.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • There are social events organised by employees which are usually internally advertised on notice boards, there is also a BBC club which you can pay to be part of who run different events throughout the year. A lot of activities are just employees getting together and not official through the bbc.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Very good atmosphere and you work with a lot of very talented people, along with using the very latest technologies. You are given a lot of responsibility but also given a lot of guidance where required, and you always have the abilities to learn new skills and work with new tech.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
  • Try to work on your communication skills and be open to listening to other peoples opinions when doing your interview. Do some research on what the BBC scheme offers and make sure that it is suitable for you. Also make sure to ask lots of questions to make sure it is right
