  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As a broadcast operator I have been trained by the BBC academy and BBC northern Ireland. I work in many areas such as cameras in and out of studio for news and multi camera programs such as Nolan Live, Top Table and Blame Game. Other areas are vision, sound and media ops.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I came in from a background of self thought online broadcasting and content production. The skills I have developed is from using a huge range of equipment and facility's that BBC have to offer. From my infrastructure technician training in Newcastle college and on placement in bbc northern Ireland I have expanded my knowledge on IP.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my program and I believe it's the best and only effective way to learn broadcasting and the work flows of day to day shifts done by a broadcast operator. The support from my managers is very useful and my colleagues on placement are great to work with.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure of the apprenticeship seems to depend based on which region you are in. It's can be morfed and changed to suit your needs and interests. If a area of broadcasting seems interested you are encouraged to give it a go and see if it sparks a passion and interest in that new area .

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer has given loads of support threw out the apprenticeship. Currently we are coming to the end of the apprenticeship and my manager is assisting me in prebing for job interviews and suggesting internal jobs to apply for. My placement manager has given me a online login for more resources to help me improve while studying in college.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • BBC Wood Norton is great training provider for this apprenticeship. The support and encouragement from the training providers there is 10/10. I have gathered all my training providers emails and do email them for answers to further questions that I didn't ask in the lessons. Defemitly recommend wood Norton training.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The lessons learned and executed in BBC wood Norton is very relevant and very useful when it comes to executing those skills at work. The skills learned have impressed my colleagues on placement. If I had to have any criticism to the training I would say there isn't enough of it compared to the alternative Newcastle college training.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Training seems to be the priority of the company and there work regions. I have been invited to attend extra lectures set up by BBC academy. There has been a few external meet ups with other staff which helps build a good community and new people to network with across all areas of the building.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The BBC will train you to be the best you can be and you will be presented with loads of opportunity's across the board and encouraged to progress your skill set and career. The facility's at the BBC are state of the art to put out the highest quality content.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
  • On the application fill out all the details on there online questions in great detail. Do try to include everything in a range of skills such as audio, camera and IT. Some regions do have practical assessments for experienced jobs. The BBC likes when you give something a go even if your not massively confident in that area.
