  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My role is to complete the subrogation queue every morning - this is the process of moving work from one pot to another. Any handler across the claims department can add work to the queue but i am the one who takes it out and allocates it. Then I complete all my teams new claims which involves calling each policyholder and setting their expectations and assigning the claims to each handler Once i have done this i complete any urgent activities that fall into our team pit through out the day

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt more claims handling skills by doing the subro queue and i have also developed my customer service skills by calling around 50 customers a day to discuss claims and obtain more information I have also developed more confidence in terms of helping my team leader send out work ect, when he is not in or is too busy. before the apprenticeship i didnt believe i was capable of doing this.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the work side of the programme, however the qualification ( CERT CII ) was too hard for a group of people who have never worked in insurance before. As a whole i felt like the actual learning side was too much pressure and too hard, an easier level would have made the experience more enjoyable

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Learning side - Not well structured , the amount of time a week we get to study / complete coursework was not enough and upon occasion had to change if call lines were busy. Our tutor wasn't in enough and Babington's didn't arrange cover when she was off sick so we missed out on a lot of time - we also were never sure what days we would see our tutor

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Our team leaders gave us as much support as they could. My TL in particular ( [This section of the comment has been removed by a member of the RateMyApprenticeship Team because it did not meet our site terms and conditions] ) was always there to help and offered as much support as possible. He was a massive help to me during my exam period The company as a whole however, did not offer much support. Our head of department was never checking in on us and as a group we had so many questions which were never answered and if they were, the answer changed regularly. We had a few months where we were told we would lose our jobs if we failed - which was never confirmed nor denied which caused enormous amounts of stress for us as we were already struggling with a hard qualification and felt like we were not seeing our tutor enough. Our team leaders arranged a meeting with someone higher to voice our concerns but nothing was done and we felt pushed aside. It took a few months for someone to confirm we would not lose our jobs if we failed.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • not much, Babington's let us down a lot in the beginning. We were given the books and left to get on with it. This book was way too hard to self teach and we didn't see our tutor for a few months. There was also a time in summer where our tutor was signed off for a few months, and babingtons failed to organise a new tutor for us despite our exam coming up

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • i feel that this qualification improves my performance in my role as the confidence levels have improved as i know more about motor insurance and different rules in which we have to follow. i still have my books under my desk and refer ti them from time to time. If people have a question on RTA my team leader directs them to me

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, I am involved in COI. this is circle of influence where a member from each team gets together with a team leader to discuss problems across the department. There is also opportunities to take part in bake sales , races and other events which are all for charity. we also send out birthday gifts for members of the team

  • 9a. Would you recommend Direct Line to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • The work life is fine , rewarding to an extent and happy. however I would not recommend doing a motor claims recovery apprenticeship just due to the uncertainty of it and the hard exam qualifications. There was not much support from the company other than our TL's and we feel Babington's weren't always doing their job


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Direct Line?
  • I would say not to do an apprenticeship as the stress is not worth the money. I would say to do a normal job with direct line as knowing you are getting paid less than everyone while working just as hard isnt good. i would also advise to get involved with as much as possible once you get the job
