  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My day-to-day duties entail the picking up of queries posed by clients, partaking in the renewal process for facilities clients have with us, and the general aiding of any requests the client has of their products and experience with us as a bank. We are also assigned inter-office jobs weekly that are our responsibility to keep up with, such as collecting/sending post and locking up the cabinets at the end of the day.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • As part of my role I have been able to exercise my analytical and financial skills which are slightly weaker than other skills. This aids my day-to-day role in picking out details that may not be quite accurate and preventing issues further down the line. Otherwise, I have been able to develop my linguistic skills in forming formal legal documents to issue to clients for their acceptance.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The work is challenging but enjoyable as I get an impression of the impact of the work I do through interaction with the client, similarly collaboration with those around me is a vital part of my role and I have an extremely helpful and supportive team which I feel comfortable asking for assistance. HSBC as a whole has an excellent culture dedicated to the constant improvement of employee satisfaction.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Both internally and externally the organisation of the scheme could be better. There seems to be little communication between the two parties and therefore apprentices are caught between two uncertain sides neither of which have offered much support in my experience. There does not seem to be much linking the parallel schemes to one another.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • From my leadership team and line manager I receive a lot of support and opportunity to dedicate time to studying should I need. I am encouraged to take the time I need from my day to study, however general demands of the job and such make me feel that it is not feasible to take this time, despite what my senior leadership say, as they do not see my workload and challenges.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Fleeting support. The provider institution is under-resourced and learners suffer as and though my direct talent coach does his best to support us, he does not necessarily have the time or support his end to do so. Since initially failing my exam I have not seen my talent coach despite having almost a month to prepare.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • A lot of the knowledge is relevant and links to my day-to-day role however there is not much that I feel has benefited me due to the internal functions of this bank specifically and that the provider hasn't been the most useful in connecting the knowledge with our jobs.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Where possible I take part in community service days which the team run semi-regularly. We attend networking events hosted by customers and other events which may widen our professional networks, and work socials are held quarterly on average to increase rapport among the team in a more casual environment which I always try to attend.

  • 9a. Would you recommend HSBC to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • The culture and development opportunities the bank offers are exceptional, with constant focus and support on next stages for any individuals career should they want to progress. There is a huge amount of diversity in jobs and people throughout the bank which keeps any environment and opportunity interesting, with chances to work anywhere in the world due to the international connections on offer.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to HSBC?
  • If you are ambitious try however you can to enter into the Commercial arm of the bank in order to widen your prospects and have an already opportune position in the bank to progress however you wish and with the capacity to meet plenty of bank employees that can present other experiences and opportunities.
