  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I have a role as a Mechanical Project Engineer. As an apprentice, my role is to learn principles and the functions of the business and apply them to projects that I may be working on in the future. This involves both theoretical and practical applications and tasks. Data should be collected as well as independent issues and used in order to develop quality and efficiency in the workplace.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt and developed a number of skills. Firstly, I have learnt a number of mechanical skills such as milling, turning and pipe fitting. These new skills have enabled me to appreciate common ideas and problems in the engineering and manufacturing industries. Skills I have developed included communication and team working, where both are vital to any engineering task.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy many aspects of the apprenticeship. The real life problems and scenarios give an idea of the demands found in some jobs. There is a lot to learn from the tasks in many jobs. These skills learned gives foundations for an experienced team member. The people working in these jobs can share their knowledge and expertise. Making learning fun and simple.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My program follows a similar path to all past apprentices. These include regular meetings with managers and colleagues to discuss progress and current events. Although I do not see my manager as often as I would want to, the meetings are informative and well rounded. There is a plan for my progress throughout the apprenticeship and this is highlighted regularly.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • With all situations, my employer has supported me. Attending competitions with my training provider has taken time from the program. Yet, my employer is more than happy to give time and offer training towards this. I receive a lot of time for training and support. My employer often allows me to attend college in the holidays, helping me progress even further in my program.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I have received some support from my training provider. Most of my lecturers work hard with us in order to learn and achieve our qualifications. Some offer additional sessions if we struggle with some tasks. However, some do not teach as required by our employers. This is a shame, considering the reputation of the college.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I feel that the teaching does not apply directly with the role I am in or the business. The course is not adjusted to the needs of the company, making it far less relevant than it should be. Yet, workshop tasks can be very easily applied to my workplace. It can be used to complete a number of jobs and functions in my company.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • The site has its own gym and sessions that are open to everyone. These are run before and after the working day, wear groups can work in teamed activities. On top of this is a golf club membership. Employees can play at charity or competition events. The company holds social events in the summer and winter where employees can socialize and enjoy themselves.

  • 9a. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • A robust framework with lots of support available. The program provides a lot of opportunities to work with many professionals in the business. This helps to learn new skills. There are many activities and events for those in the early careers communities, enabling us to socialize and share skills. The atmosphere is positive and everyday is different.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • Aim to learn as much about the company as possible. This shows how enthusiastic you are about the company. Try to appreciate the job we do. What do we do and who do we associate with. Learn about the products and services. Enjoy the role you play. Everyday is different and there are always more opportunities on the way. It makes every day more interesting.
