  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • The role involves a mix of admin tasks, such as preparing engagement letters or completing client take-on work, and tax advisory work. This advisory work can be in the form of preparing structuring documents or assisting the client with their tax planning. The advisory work is far more interesting than the admin work but there is generally more admin work at our level.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes - I have learned a lot about tax and accounting since joining. This has been through a combination of internal training, external exams and on-the-job learning. Other skills that have been developed are team work and public speaking. I have attended internal training for public speaking and practiced as part of the job.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • The main selling point of this job is the learning and experience, not the enjoyment. I enjoy parts of the job and certain projects but on the whole I wouldn't say I enjoy the job itself. Regarding the apprenticeship programme I am yet to enjoy this. So far we have not been made aware of what is expected of us, and we never got a say in whether we had to become an apprentice. The decision was made for us and so far as only required additional work that has not benefitted our job.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Until recently the programme was not well structured. We did not know what was expected of us and did not get a choice on whether we became apprentices. However, recently First Intuition have assigned us coaches and provided much more clarity on what is expected of us and what we need to do.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We receive support from our employer via First Intuition. We also have coaches at our employer who we can turn to for guidance but we must initiate this. The support is not hands-on and until recently we received no support whatsoever from our employer with regards to the Apprenticeship programme.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • We receive lots of support. First Intuition are very good at tutoring us and providing after hours support. All of our tutors are contactable outside of class and we can ask as many questions as we like. They also prepare study notes for us which are very useful for learning and revision.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • Certain aspects of the qualification helps in our role. The CTA exams and tax-specific ACA exams, as well as accounting exams, are useful in our jobs as they are directly relevant to the advice we give to clients. However, certain ACA exams are not relevant to our work and therefore less useful.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes there are. There are sports teams and fitness events which we can get involved in. There is a large community at Deloitte and they support clubs through generous funding. There are also lots of networking opportunities and team socials to get to know other members of the team better.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Deloitte to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • Because they are a very well-established and well-regarded company. The graduate program is also very well structured - they focus heavily on learning and do not demand any previous knowledge form school/university. Also, given the size of the graduate intake, there is a feeling of having a year-group which makes the transition to working life easier.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Deloitte?
  • Try to show that you are a real person with a personality. The company is not looking for robots who only have excellent grades - they want real people who can engage with others and interact with a team. Therefore, when applying, make sure to emphasise hobbies and achievements that aren't solely academic.
