  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • As stocks manager I need to plan and review the warehouse stocks. This includes stock movement and processes. Large items need to be planned into specific locations and returns stock also needs to be account for and processed correctly. The layout of the warehouse and that of the aisles is also routinely checked and transactions within the warehouse are also reviewed for errors.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt that there are a number of ways to help make processes more efficient. From spaghetti diagrams and flow charts to Tim woods waste management. This has been very helpful in trying to improve the layout of the warehouse and making current process more time effective. It has also helped me with my communication both written and verbal and to look at things in different ways.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I found the programme quiet enjoyable and it was varied in the activities and work days. This difference helped keep the content fresh and easier to remember as it helped make memory hooks. I personally enjoyed the activity for starting a factory and starting with a badly organised one and to then come up with ways to improve the process. It encouraged team work and communication and showed even small changes can make a difference.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The structure of the programme is good although one visit a month can lead to this being forgotten or miss remembered. The only improvement would be to have a quick review time at the start of each new session to review the older content. However, the programme moves at a good pace to keep things interesting and has a good balance of hands on and theory.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive time off from my role to complete the training days and I haven't had occasion to miss any days as they are very flexible. They also allow me to spend time when needed collecting any information including photos and safe systems of work to help with the project that I have to do as I need to make a change within the workplace. As long as I clearly set out what I am going to do they let me.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • Training provider are very supportive and have even changed the test part to a paper based one for those of us that wanted that. They have always explained the activities and required outcomes of the project and theory days clearly and have gone through it in different ways for when people haven't fully understood. I can say they have been very good at communicating what is needed in a clear and positive way.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • It has helped me to better plan for future stock and also to be more confident in reviewing our current processes and not to just accept them. It has meant I have caused the warehouse to have better space management and have encouraged other to review what they see and suggest any changes. It has helped with two way communication and helped me show how small changes can make a big difference.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes there are. We have the sports and social club which includes a monthly raffle as well as the weekly prize draw for a chance to win some money as well as support local charities. Many people are involved in charity work and ask for help or participation from others. We also have customer fulfilment centre of the year which include all centre across the UK to compete to be seen as the best. This includes full sites, teams and individuals.

  • 9a. Would you recommend DHL to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • They are a good company to work for not only at my site but across the globe with many job opportunities available. It can be easy to be in one business sector and then change to another. They have a good pension plan, benefits scheme and the people are always pleasant and hard working. I've never worked for another company that has had such a good team in a local, uk and global sense.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to DHL?
  • If you are hard working and willing to make a difference then do it! Make sure you have examples of doing such though and to say what happened afterwards. Be open and honest as this will take you far as well as being a keen learner looking for new challenges. DHL can help you go anywhere as long as you show willing.
