  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My day to day roles include conducting research on customers, competitors and any other company's that the wider business may need information on. I also attend a lot of management courses, to prepare me for my future role as a manager after the apprenticeship programme has finished. I complete a lot of ad hoc tasks so no one day is the same, but I am always engaged and busy doing different tasks.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed endless new skills since starting my apprenticeship in August 2018. I have learnt how to use software such as excel and TED effectively, which is important in my day to day job. I have massively developed my analytical skills, which I acquired whilst studying my A Levels. DHL are keen on training people which is really important to me as apprentice and my development.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I chose the DHL Chartered Management Degree Apprenticeship programme as an alternative to university, as I wanted to be in work and gaining experience whilst still furthering my education. I enjoy the programme as it allows me to gain knowledge from other members of the business and paves my way to a very successful career.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The programme is structured very well: I work 4 days a week in the office and study one day a week from home. This structure is great as it means I always get time to get my degree work done away from the office in my own space. The programme is planned out really well by the Open University and they are always there to assist me.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My employer is very supportive - my line manager is always on hand if I need support but I tend to independently get on with my work. The emerging talent team at DHL are incredible and always there to answer any queries we have. The support system at DHL is brilliant, especially for a young person like myself.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • The open university are really helpful and the way the apprenticeship programme is set out online means its easy to navigate and contact someone if you need assistance. Your tutor is just an email away and they host online seminars and face to face day schools to support students on the programme.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • My qualification is in Business Management, so the content I learn can be related to a lot of tasks I complete on a daily basis. On the other hand, a lot of the qualification is theory based and surrounding topics which aren't relevant to my role, but it is useful to have all of the knowledge for the future.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • DHL are invested in giving back to the community, so there are always CSR events going on to get involved in. We have recently started a committee in our team and have signed up to events such as Tough Mudder to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital. We host a lot of charity events throughout the year.

  • 9a. Would you recommend DHL to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I couldn't ask for a better company to work for whilst starting out my degree. Even in the 5 months I have been here, I have become much more confident and learnt so many new skills which will help me throughout my whole career. I am gaining a degree free of charge, as they are investing in my future.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to DHL?
  • Make sure you are prepared for hard work and that you are dedicated to carrying out a full time job and a degree. It is very busy and keeps you on your toes, but you will come out at the end with tons of experience in comparison to someone who has just gone to university. You are investing in yourself and your future by puting the hard work in now!
