  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am currently extending my previous placement in Stage 1 Platform. I am working on the Type 26 mock up cabins, which involves working closely with the customer in order for them to detail their requirements. the mock ups are a good project as it lets you see a project from design, build and final sign off.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have mainly learned communication skills which has allowed me to be more confident when presenting to others and phoning or emailing. I have also developed new IT skills when using a range of new software which allows me to do a variety of jobs that I was previously unable to do.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy my program as there a variety of placements covering all aspects of the business. This gets you a good understanding of all the departments who work together to produce the same output. The program is also good because you meet a lot of new people and contacts who you can contact in the future if help is required.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The program is well structured and organised as I said previously about the placements across the business. I also go to college on Thursdays as part of my day release where I study and HND in Mechanical Engineering. I have already did a an HNC in Engineering Systems and Mechanical Engineering.

  • 5. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • there is constant support from the business and especially from training officers and line managers. They encourage apprenticeships as it is daily experience in the work place are keen to get you involved in different projects to give you a good understanding of the business. They are also easy to talk to for any issues.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • there is support from training officers regarding qualifications. So far I have achieved a SVQ Leven 2 which included: pipefitting, welding and electrical. I then successfully completed an HNC in Engineering Systems in my 1st year, another HNC in Mechanical Engineering in my 2nd year and now an HND in Mechanical Engineering in my 3rd year

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • The qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role as it makes you realise how the subjects you learn in college reflect on the business. For example, within lifting and turning I was able to implement my knowledge from Statics that I got at college.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • Yes, there is a lot of STEM events that take place which lets you work with different apprentices and school to inspire young people to join BAE Systems. There is also a Apprentice council who organise events for apprentices to work together. This allows you to widen your network across the business.

  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend BAE Systems to a friend as there is lots of opportunities here such as business opportunities, STEM Activities and awards, such as apprentice of the year. Training officers and line managers are also very supportive of apprentices and are keen to develop your knowledge within ship building and engineering.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • When applying you BAE Systems, the advice I would give would be just to try your best. the application process is made up of an application form, a aptitude test and an assessment day.You will be competing against hundreds and thousands of people so you need to stand out.
