  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Looking after and fixing any asset on a water treatment works. This involves carrying out electrical testing, instrument calibrations. This would also include electrical installations and commissioning of new equipment and replacing old equipment. I also was given the responsibility of fire marshal which involved carrying out regular checks on the safety equipment on site.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes. I have learnt lots of new skills including first aid training, electrical NVQ, engineering BTEC level 3, hand arm vibration training, I have learnt about the equipment we use to dose chlorine and sulphur gas carrying out training with DeNora. These skills add to my portfolio of existing skills and have all been funded by my employer.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • My programme with severn trent was great. Although there was a few leadership changes in the first 6-12 months the programme had plenty of support and the relationships made on site with my colleagues was a great way to help me develop my character. I had a great time throughout the three years.

  • 4. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Some of the structure changed from the beginning and parts of the final assessments got slightly confusing as the goal posts of what we were expected to achieve changed on regular intervals making it difficult to fully prepare however the structure was set and followed to in the end. It was fairly well organised.

  • 6. How much support do you receive from your training provider when working towards your qualifications?
  • I had lots of support in regards to gaining my qualifications. The employer made it easy for me to get the correct training. I attended numerous training events hosted by the employer. The qualifications I got were helped numerous times due to the employer allowing me to work on the qualifications whilst on site creating time for me.

  • 7. How well do you feel that your qualification (through your training provider) helps you to perform better in your role?
  • I believe that some of the training off site at EEF was useful but some of it was also not relevant to the role. However, have numerous skills in other areas helps you to become a well rounded engineer and find it vital to have some appreciation of other skills.

  • 8. Are there extra-curricular activities to get involved in at your work? (For example, any social activities, sports teams, or even professional networking events.)
  • We have very little extra curricular activities. We do have some networking events but they are mostly internal. Severn Trent do not really do many sports organised events due to the working area being so large that it would be difficult to organise over such a large area of people.

  • 9a. Would you recommend Severn Trent to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • Great place to work for. lots of benefits of being a severn trent employee. Offer you a good overall package and the working hours are great. They support you from the get go and allow you to develop into the worker you would like to be. They are a well thought of brand and make me feel proud to be apart of them.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Severn Trent?
  • I would always advise people to look into the company prior to applying. Get an understanding of the companies ethos and how the company works. Understand the business and the role that you would be applying for. I think that it is crucial to have a similar belief to the firm that you are intending to work for.
