Trainee Broadcast Engineer, on my most recent placement I worked on the Radio Visualisation project which involved varying day to day tasks from networking to hardware set up, integrating new hardware into existing infrastructure and configuration design. Additionally I both received and lead training. I interacted with other engineers in addition to operators, technicians and journalists. I was responsible for the implementation of various project related tasks and resultantly played a part in the project meeting deadlines.
Further experience in many different software packages, new experience with multiple types of hardware (routers, talkback panels, cameras, etc.) and experience in electrical engineering that I had not covered in previous study.
I have a good team, everyone has been very helpful and proactive in my learning, it has exceeded my expectations.
Yes, I feel that the BBC do a lot for their employees based on their policies. Additionally, both my placement manager and line manager have recognised my successes and I feel like a valued member of the team.
Very well organised in terms of placement scheduling, training, university.
I receive any required support from my training providers and am able to express any expectations/concerns and have them be recognised and addressed.
Everyone that I've had interactions with has been very supportive and as I am a trainee they are very keen to offer guidance on any areas that I require it in.
The salary is within the general average masters degree graduate, however it is on the lower side of this scale for engineers.
The budget doesn't really stretch to anything that hasn't been pre-planned, as such there aren't many opportunities outside of the workplace.
Yes
Great place to work, learn and foster a supportive environment where employees feel valued.
The application process is very thorough and if you are not passionate about the role you're applying for, this will become very evident in the type of assessments that they do. BBC appear only to want people who will enjoy their area of work, as opposed to those who do it based on other motivations (e.g. monetary).
