I am one of the two engineering apprentices, currently we are on a rotation period. this means we spend time in each department before spending the last year in one department. Currently with facilities, my repsonsibilities include calbirations and general upkeep of the site. For me each day is different as work is completed as it is assigned at the beginning of the week.
I have gained a lot of skills in my apprenticeship and my training at college, including a HNC and next year a HND, both in electronic and electrical engineering. I have also completed a wide range of internal training, such as being able to operate parts of machinery for the packaging lines to how to control and operate QBMS.
Overall i enjoy my programme, the people i work with are nice and friendly. they are always willing to help me when needed. the company is also helpful in offering my opportunties and experiences to learn as they arrive. I did come in expecting the apprenticeship to be a bit better organised as that has been its only failing.
In some aspects i do feel valved, i am given more and more responsibility and am being treated like any other employee. I recieve recognition for the work i do and constructive critism when needed.
There are some parts of the apprenticeship for me that could have been structured better. As with college i was intially placed on the wrong course, payment was late and that somehow came back to myself to deal with. The rotation of depertments have been a bit of a mess as people either cant rotate us yet or arent ready. I recieve the support and training needed with no problem.
Our training provider, college, is good at giving feedback and help when needed. Cogent, we have one to ones every quater to go through everything and review all aspects of the course so far. i feel supported in my apprenticeship.
I recieve support for my employers, however most of the times if i need the support i must ask for it which is normal really. they are always able to offer assistance or help when needed, helping me find the right people to ask or showing me what needs to be done.
Overall my pay is better now several years into my apprenticeship than at the beginning. Due to costs, i am unable to move out of my parents due to rent prices on my current wage. however i am able to afford a car, food, going out money and savings. Portsmouth isnt a too expensive city overall.
There are opportunties outside of the work that the company offers, however i normally do not get invloved in them due to my busy private life.
Yes
Overall it depends on what they want to do. but they do offer a good work place envirnment that is easy and friendly to work in. There are some negatives but the same can be said about any job really.
Do your research, pratice questions that are revelant to your field. Find somethin your can talk about passioniltiy to them about thats revelant such as a project or some work experience you had.
