  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job title is- Signaling Design Apprentice. My job is to assist with design work. I work use cad software to complete the design tasks and make sure to record progress on the relevant trackers. I currently work on the Birmingham New Street Re-signaling project.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have completed a BTEC level 3 in Electrical and Electronic engineering. I am currently attending college once a week as I work towards a Foundation Degree in Electrical, Electronics and Communications engineering. I have attended a number of internal training courses such as BST (Basic Signaling Technology), IST (Intermediate Signaling Technology), MoD5 and RRI. The apprenticeship has allowed me to improve my confidence and communication skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy work as it presents new challenges on a day to day basis. The apprenticeship exceeded my expectations as I initially did not know what to expect.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Siemens?
  • All employees are valued by the company. Managers make sure that all employees are appreciated by awarding champions awards for doing well at college and for 'going the extra' mile in the office.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • During the induction to the company you are told about the training you must undertake. The training courses are booked months in advance so that you have time to prepare. There is a mentoring system in place when you start in the office, your mentor is there to help and support you throughout the first few month in the office.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • The college gives support whenever necessary. Tutors are always willing to answer questions and solve any issues you may have.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • The training team always try to support apprentices with training courses and are always willing to answer any questions. Managers and senior staff members are willing to help with any issues you have during your work. You are encouraged to ask questions whenever you are stuck or need help.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My salary meets all costs that I have each month. It allows me to pay for my travel to work and any other bills I have.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are a number of volunteering opportunities that you can attend to represent Siemens. All employees have 2 volunteering days a year, apprentices are encouraged to volunteer whenever they can.

  • Yes

  • Siemens is a reputable global company that can offer you numerous opportunities. Working for them gives you a chance to gain new skills and experience.


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Siemens?
  • You should make sure you are well prepared for the interview. You should learn about the company and gain a brief understanding of railway signaling. Knowing about railway signaling gives you a greater advantage of passing the interview stage.
