  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I work full time (4/5 days a week) in placements in which I move round on four monthly placements. These cover all aspects of the project management function (from controls, to risk, to build delivery). They are largely support roles that develop understanding of the functions but in some areas responsibility is assigned to run with pieces of work to develop competencies - for example in risk you support most of the risk reviews but are also assigned some risk areas to own and manage. I also attend college one day a week to work towards a foundation degree.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Throughout my apprenticeship my product knowledge has drastically increased which has also improved my ability to operate in the project management function. I have also developed my understanding on the processes that BAE follow to manage projects such as the PMAP process and how they align to the academic processes we study at college.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy the programme has it has allowed me to develop my personal skills as well as knowledge in a challenging environment. This is largely due to the support offered as part of the programme as despite trying to push you, there is almost a 'safety net' that comes with being an apprentice which is comforting.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BAE Systems?
  • I feel valued as an apprentice and as a member of my team in many aspects of my placement, and have always felt valued by the team I have joined. However, there is sometimes an aspect that graduates appear to be valued more by BAE compared to apprentices, where in fact I feel we offer similar.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is extremely well structured with regular reviews to ensure the quality of the programme is at the required level and I always feel there Early careers team is there to support me should ever I need it. However, the location of our next placement could be communicated earlier to improve further.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • We receive regular training on any BAE wide training programmes that full-time staff have available to them. We also attend college to work towards a higher apprenticeship and foundation degree as part of the programme. This is a high level of support and are always available via email as required and respond quickly.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We receive a lot of support through the structured review and feedback forums such as 12 weekly reviews, end of placement reviews and monthly one-to-ones. This makes you feel comfortable communicating any issues with them. The team are also supporting and proactive with dealing with any issues.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • It meets my costs well currently, however I currently live at home with my parents. If I was to live on my own and pay for the necessary bills this could be much more of a challenge. However, the exit pay we are expected to get is expected to meet this cost and will therefore be ok.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are a lot of opportunities outside of work, particularly through stretch assignments which offer a good opportunity to raise money for charity or organise social events. Additionally, the social aspect of all the teams have been good and I have felt included in all of them.

  • 9. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • There are a lot of opportunities, the work is interesting and everybody is really supportive. This creates a good environment to work and develop to the best of my ability. Also, the salary and package is of a good standard for the local area which gives you the freedom to pursue any interests you have.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • Ensure you show enthusiasm and a level of interest in the product as I believe this is appreciated in the business as we are all in some way contributing to the delivery of the submarines and therefore the protection of the country through the Royal Navy.
