Apprentice Assistant Solutions Engineer Review

I am a Apprentice Assistant Solutions Engineer with an electrical framework, working out of the offices in Derby. My daily tasks and responsibilities involve helping my team with projects they are working on, getting contractors and operators on site at the right times and being a mentor to other apprentices.

Since working within my team I have learned many different skills, these would include company specific engineering knowledge, public speaking and working on good communication. I have completed several different internal and external training courses from working at height to mental health first aid to project management training. All of these have helped me gain confidence to complete my job better.

The culture of the company is amazing, every person I have met is willing to help you and teach you. My team always offer support when I need it and when I need extra support I can turn to the other apprentices as we have built our own little community. The culture here has met my expectations and I have really enjoyed my time spent at Severn Trent.

I feel a very valued member of the team at Severn Trent. This is shown by the support from my team who put me forward to by Apprentice of the Year at our Awesome Awards. Everyone in the team is always positive about any work I complete and give positive feedback when I ask for any. I feel my manager is very appreciative of my work.

I feel this apprenticeship program is organised and structured in a good way. We have support from our teams as well as from the HR team that supports use when we need extra help. The NVQ is good as we have 6 weekly meetings that allows you to get enough work completed in that time. I have support whenever I ask for it.

I have 6 weekly meetings with someone from my training provider. They are very supportive when I hand in work and offer advice on how to make it better. They are always available by phone or email and reply quickly to any questions I have. Whenever I have a problem I am sure that my training mentor will be able to offer me great support or point me in the direction of someone who can.

Whenever I have an issue I feel that I can go to my mentor within my team or the HR team, they are always quick to respond and offer good advice. I also feel I can ask my manager is I need to, although he can be busy and sometimes will take awhile to make a decision. Overall the support and guidance I get is good.

Any travel that I do on work time is covered by expenses which will then cover any wear and tear on my car as well as fuel costs. As far as living costs go, I feel we are paid well for the type of apprenticeship, although I have had to move as part of this job and therefor it has been a struggle.

In my team we are always doing events outside of work, this is anything from badminton to meals out. On top of this we have formed a apprentice group, in this group we have meet ups and go to different events together. Examples of company events work be charity call centres and team away days. These events cover the whole of the Severn Trent region.

Severn Trent is a great place to work. There are so many different opportunities that are out there if you are willing to look for them. Everyone is willing to help you as much as they can and the job role itself is interesting work. Overall I would recommend Severn Trent.

Just be yourself. It is always very scary going into interviews and assessment centres where you are being watched and don't know anyone but you just need to stay calm and realise they just want you to be yourself and enjoy it. They are not scary people and just want to make sure they can get the most out of you as they can.
