Joiner Review

Carpentry and Joinery apprenticeship, day to day tasks can change every day from skirting boards to architraves to waterproofing or making shutters for concrete pours.

I have learnt a lot of new practical and academic skills from on the job training and day release college. I can now fully understand risk assessments and method statements, I can follow instructions carefully and interpret diagrams and drawings efficiently. I have learnt Joinery skills from different joiners knowing how to fix/ do a task in many different ways. I have gained 3 years of Joinery experience on site and I am now hoping to learn and expand on that experience.

I enjoy my programme a lot as every day is different. Since the start of my time I have been on a different range of jobs starting from the Alder Hey, Glan Clywd hospital on a refurbishment job, Unity on Chapel street and currently have the privilege of starting on the Cancer research hospital Clatterbridge in Liverpool. Moving onto different projects and seeing the finished result is a reward in itself. I have gained the following training within my programme such as first aid, fire marshal, COSHH, abrahsive wheel and my SSSTS course these have been very enjoyable.

I feel very valued by Laing O Rourke as they support me in anything that I feel i need with regards to training/ qualifications. Having finished my apprenticeship I was approved to start my new course and start to take the next steps to fulfilling my career goals which is trainee construction management. Laing O Rourke have guided me onto the right pathway and I couldn't be more happier to continue my training with them.

My Programme is very structured as I have been given a specific training matrix to follow and pass. It is organised as I attend college two evenings a week after work and I have to get a register to sign to make sure I attended. My project manager is making sure I get relevant tasks/training so that I learn enough on the job to help me with my course and career.

I receive a lot of support, if I have any problems I have their contact number/email. I get frequent meetings with my training provider, were we discuss current targets i set for myself or anything I need help with.

My employer is very supportive. I get relevant training, support by other colleagues in the workplace from every job i have been on. When doing course work many members of the team will help me if struggling.

I am happy with the package i get.

Yes. There are chances to go to different training facilities across the board. There are many great company events including clatterbridge cancer trust ball including many charity fundraising games.

Yes

As they support you in every way making sure you get the correct training for the current apprenticeship you are on. If you feel that you are lacking in a department e.g. hanging doors they will facilitate you by putting you on that until you learn how to do it. If you need to move to a different job to gain more experience e.g. in roofing they will make sure you are sent to one involving roofing. Laing O Rourke are a fantastic company to work for.

When applying make sure you are certain in the role you are applying for and that you know all the ins and outs of the company. Application process may be daunting at first but keep calm.
