  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • My job title is: Senior Network Technician a basic summary of my role is to keep the sewer network flowing and maintain it, this involves identifying issues which cause blockages and trying to prevent them from happening again. e.g. roots growing into a pipe causing a blockage then causing sewage to escape possibly into a nearby watercourse which would then be classed as a pollution. Once a pollution is confirmed we then need to liase with the environment agency and inform them of the impact and what we are doing to mitigate the issue

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have developed by communication skills greatly by being introduced into a new team, as well as dealing with contractors whether this be for positive or negative issues. I have been given a vast amount of training from Severn Trent to help me be able to carry out my role successfully and efficiently, as well as developing skills through my college course and NVQ

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy my apprenticeship programme with severn trent due to it being a great opportunity which I feel very lucky to have gained, and enjoy working with the people who are in my team and the contractors who we work with due to them being friendly and willing to teach me new things

  • 4. How valued do you feel by Severn Trent?
  • I feel my manager feels I am a good addition to the team as I have already helped reduce the workload of the rest of my colleagues allowing them to focus on other things which they were not previously able to, the apprenticeship team often send us emails with opportunities to engage in events and recognise what we do

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • My college course is very well organised and structured due to the lecturer being very good and knowledgeable, where as the NVQ being a new scheme and qualification run by EEF hasn't been very well organised as we currently don't have an assessor available and no one really knew much about the NVQ for a long time

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • support is available very easily from both the college tutor and staff at EEF and is very easy to get in touch with people either via email or a phone call if I have any queries about the apprenticeship programme or queries in general

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I receive good support from my manager and his team with himself and his team often sitting with me and teaching me new things about the role, also HR are always readily available and insist we contact them with any queries or concerns we may have about anything which is nice and reassuring

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I believe for an apprenticeship the salary at severn trent is very good in the first year and more than covers my costs at the moment, I am yet to see what the increase will be over the years but am sure it will be more than adequate

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are a lot of events in which the apprenticeship HR team offer us parts in sometimes on the weekends which are a good way of letting other people know about apprenticeship programmes and what they have to offer, and also help school leavers know what to expect when they finish education and what different options they have

  • 9. Would you recommend Severn Trent to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • It is a large company with lots of benefits including a good salary, pension, and a good way to get into a career due to very good apprenticeship and graduate programmes


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Severn Trent?
  • put as much effort as you can into the application process due to high volumes of people applying and you will need to stand out, be confident at interviews and prepare well for assessment days
