I work in Points West News, where I have a learnt a variety of different jobs ranging from floor managing to editing. Each day is a different job however the job doesn’t change which makes it simpler. Recently I have been mainly in the gallery doing autocue and sound and possibly be moving onto vision mixing.
I have learnt a lot of new skills as there is lots to do in news. I have developed more in my editing skills and am able to clip up the weather and learning to advance in creating small packages. I have learnt a lot of new skills on the hub and understanding all of the BBC’s sources and how they work etc.
I enjoy my apprenticeship very much, the work placement is phenomenal and I am learning so many new skills. The only issue I have is with the college part that certain things aren’t happening that should be but are being resolved.
I feel valued at the BBC and even though I’m an apprentice I’m treated like I’m staff. I also have no fears with asking for help or asking questions about things and sometimes I’m asked to do jobs for others which makes me feel like I have intergrated well into the group.
The apprenticeship is structured well and each week I know what I’m doing and what jobs I have to do. This also allows me to learn all the different skills over the year.
I receive a lot of support from all of my colleagues and my manager which allows me to feel comfortable in the different roles I do.

My salary is good and allows me to pay all my bills and still have a little bit of leverage nearing the end of the month. The new pay rise allows gives me a bit extra to help with certain payments etc.
There are lots of opportunities to do certain different things outside of the BBC and with my college I am able to talk to others who work in different media institutions and understand how to get into them etc.
Yes
It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and it’s allowed me to excel in all different types of skills and helped me build new ones. It’s also taught me things about the media that I didn’t know about which helps me thinking about future jobs.
Don’t think you can’t do it. Not having much experience doesn’t mean you won’t get a chance.
