Working as an apprentice Broadcasting Engineer currently on placement at BBC Bristol mainly consists of fault finding in broken equipment and repair tasks on cameras, computers etc. There are occasional projects for film and TV shows working on developing solutions such as building a remote control tank track mounted camera for filming in desert environments.
I am constantly developing my problem solving skills while working at things such as fault finding and also practical skills such as soldering and DIY-type abilities such as sawing and woodwork.
When I have projects and tasks to work on I enjoy the work very thoroughly however I am currently experiencing a lot of down time in between which is less fulfilling.
I feel strongly valued within the BBC as despite my level of knowledge and ability being too low currently for independent engineering work I am still fully involved in much of the day to day work.
The programme has been very thoroughly organised and I feel as though time is very well allocated to all the different aspects of the course such as the training and placement. In some cases the information on certain aspects such as where my next placement is going to be is given a little later than I would like however overall i am very satisfied with the organisation.
Throughout the course I have found that support is very easy to find when needed with very quick response time to emails from my course managers and the university lecturers. Some lecturers have been very supporting and friendly while others less so. However overall the level of support is strong.

The salary package is definitely enough to meet my requirements for travel and accommodation cost and when the sponsored degree is factored into this also it makes for a very appealing salary.
Due to the block release nature of attending university it is not possible to get involved in the university clubs and events however when on placement and at home there are lots of chances for extra curricular activities both through the BBC with running careers fairs and also independently due to the pay from the apprenticeship.
Yes
I feel as though the BBC is a very inclusive and friendly corporation to work for and it offers a lot of learning opportunities and is an exciting place to work.
The interview process for my course was very intensive but all I could do was thorough preparation for the project we were set and for the skills based interview questions. Therefore it is hard to give advice for as all you can do is your best and see what happens.
