I work in Broadcast Operations, the apprenticeship covers the full range of the department, and I can work in anything from camera operation, sound, media intake, and outside broadcasts. It provides a really good variety of departments to work in and get a feel for what would be best for you. It really gives an idea of the full spectrum the industry has to offer.
I've learnt many skills since starting, these include Camera operating, both studio and outside broadcast cameras, using sound desks and setting up microphones, vision mixing, setting up lighting and more. This was done with the BBC at a training facility.
I enjoy the programme very much, there are a very good bunch of people on my course, all of whom are eager to work and learn. The course covers a nice variety and the people I get to work with are all fantastic. The work itself is very rewarding, and I enjoy seeing the outcome of my work. It's definitely different to my expectations, but in a good way.
I feel very valued. The managers of this course are fantastic and are available at all times to ensure my well-being and to help solve any issues I have. Successes are recognised and acknowledged, both by colleagues and managers. Generally I can get involved and do work directly, however not all the time, since some programmes do not lend themselves to having an apprentice working on them, so I would be trailing in that case, which still allows me to be involved to an extent, I just feel like it can be restricted in that sense.
The programme is well spread out, and is thoroughly well planned. There is plenty of communication, and training is timetabled in over the two years.
The college has not been great. There have been a number of issues, and the support is limited. Generally, it feels like the college is not well organised, however a number of staff members have had to leave since we started, so it has been turning around.
Fantastic support from the BBC. My manager is readily available for any queries, and will provide guidance where necessary. The attitude is great, and there is a brilliant team available to support the apprentices.
The salary covers costs well. All costs involved with college/training are covered by expenses.
I wouldn't say there is much outside of work - however work can cover all hours, as this is a 24 hour business. There are plenty of opportunities within work to be taken at any time, rather than having to go outside work for opportunities.
Yes
It's a great experience and gives the opportunity to work with some great people who really care about their work, and are all eager to help you learn.
With regards to application; just make it very clear how passionate you are about the job. They're looking for people who really care and want to be a part of the industry, not people just looking for a job. The assessment day will ask you to make a film, just make sure you can justify why you did things the way you did, and really just try and come across as eager to learn on the whole. Take any chance you can get within the organisation, everyone's willing to help you out, you've just got to ask.
