  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I'm currently an Apprentice with a live BBC television programme. Whilst in the office I respond to mail and assist with research, production management and digital roles and when on location I assume more of a runner role. This means that I help with making props as well as in the studio when the programme actually airs.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I was lucky to be able to go on a Safeguarding course which really opened my eyes to the do's and don't of broadcasting but I've also bettered my knowledge of everyday programmes like excel and word as well as learnt new skills on internal systems and gained knowledge that I didn't have about the broadcasting industry.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • On a daily basis I can't really believe the opportunities I get when you consider that I entered the industry with limited experience. My team have always been really helpful and friendly and I can't rate my scheme managers highly enough. I'll be sad when my scheme ends!

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BBC?
  • The BBC are great at making me feel valued. Despite being at the lowest level at the moment I am still very included and trusted with a lot of pretty important things. Everyone involved seems keen to make sure I get the best out of my experience and my managers really make an effort to see how I am finding things, despite being busy themselves.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • We had a fantastic induction week which was great for networking with others who were on different schemes across the country. When settled at my base there were/are plenty of meetings in place as well as emails sent to track progress and keep us informed.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • I receive support from a number of people in connection with my training provider. They are always accessible by email which is fantastic but I see one of other of them regularly enough too to track my progress.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • My scheme manager in particular is fantastic and is in regular contact with us all. She has always answered any questions helpfully and offers guidance for any future employment. I also have a number of sessions with my manager in order to catch up, track my progress and for her to ask if there is anything else I would like to do within the production which is great.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • It can be tight at times but as long as I am sensible with money then there aren't problems. I am lucky in that I walk to work so have no travel costs but I would imagine it is slightly more tight for other apprentices who do have to travel further every day.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are many opportunities outside of work in and around Bristol. There are many musical venues, cinemas etc. for those who are not interested in sport but, for those who are, there are plenty of gyms and sports activities in the area. I'm not sure about voluntary opportunities but I am sure there will be some - I simply haven't asked or looked for them!

  • 9. Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • It's the best thing I ever did. I'm so glad I waited for the right opportunity rather than rushing into going to university just because everyone else was. The experiences that I get and the people I get to talk to and work with are second to none. A lot of the time I really can't believe the opportunity I've been given.- or that I'm paid for it!

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
  • Stay focused. Know where you want to start out and in your application always point out where you are aiming to be and what you would get involved in in the future. Talk to as many people as you can because they have so much experience and you never know where they or their advice may lead you. Make sure you listen to people as much as you talk to them too!
