  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • Day-to-day I could be doing a wide range of things. I work in different departments throughout the BBC over the course of the year. I have been given jobs such as finding and interviewing guests to come on a radio show, been a runner for music events held here, edited music and audio for podcasts, replying to emails and creating briefs. The role is highly varied and no two days are the same.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes I have learnt many new skills whilst here at the BBC. I have learnt how to create research briefs, radio broadcasting standards, how to talk to colleagues in a professional manner. There have been training courses for us on various computer programmes also which I can now take with me outside of work. I have also developed my communication skills with people I don't know over the phone.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I enjoy it a lot! The work is always varied and challenging, the teams of people I work with are always engaging and intelligent. The company culture is good, there's a real sense of camaraderie here. Its met my expectations and then exceeded them. I also like how my placement changes every 5 weeks and I work with a different department and learn new skills.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BBC?
  • This is one area were I perhaps don't feel as strongly. It really depends on who I'm working with but some departments treat you as an afterthought I feel. I do get recognition for my work, but sometimes I feel like I don't get much involvement with tasks or not been recognised for putting in extra work.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • It is very well structured in fairness. The programme has me switching departments every 5 weeks which gives me lots of time to see and work in all areas of the BBC. The programme is really well organised with everything from day 1 set out and written down for us. We have all been given individual mentors and schedules so it is a very well crafted programme and one I cannot fault.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • We each have an individual mentor who is a senior member of staff that organises catch up meetings with us and helps us with any queries or advice. There is support from our main apprenticeship leader who meets with us every month and there is overwhelming support from these people in every aspect of our work/college. And out college leader meets us every 2 weeks to help us with our coursework. I couldn't fault the support I have been receiving from our training providers.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • We get a lot of support from our employers with our mentors and managers. There is a good attitude towards helping us from the departments as some of them have been in my shoes previously as an apprentice. There are plenty of accessibility options here also with lots of lifts and DSE chairs which are assessed for individuals if necessary.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • Well it is much better then most apprenticeships but still farily low compared to a lot of no-skilled jobs. However the upside is that I get training and will be on more money at the end of this as a result of the qualification. The location is ideal, I live 8 minutes walk so there is no issue there. I'm struggling to meet living costs due to bills and DD's I've had from before when I was on more money but I knew this would be the case coming into the apprenticeship.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • There are lots of opportunity's, we get sent emails about apprenticeship showcases and events that we are eligible to go to. Two apprentices even got the chance to have tea at the head of BBC Scotland's house! There are lots of things to do here as its based in the centre of Glasgow which is a fantastic city and has lots of independent film companies which will be great for options when my apprenticeship is over.

  • 9. Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • because it is a great company to work for, everyone has heard of the BBC and it provides world class training and looks great on a CV. The opportunities I have got from being here have been like nothing else I have ever had in my life. It truly has been life changing in terms of where I can go next from this.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
  • Be yourself, the interviewers have done this countless times, they are looking for genuine people who have got some experience in this field and are wanting to push themselves and aim high. I would have liked to have been told why in particularly I got chosen and what I did which stood out. The assessment days where good and they where very accommodating with me as they allowed me to do the final interview over the phone as I lived nearly 300 miles away.
