  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am an Apprentice runner on Children's Presentation for Cbeebies an CBBC. I do both office and studio work consisting of opening mail (birthday cards, fan mail, competition entries) and other office tasks such as helping the team with other jobs. I get props in the studio ready for each link and prepare birthday cards for the presenters as well as tidy up and assist the floor manager.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Most of my work is daily tasks so for me it's more about getting better at being more efficient and planning than it is to learn new skills.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • I really enjoy the team I work in. I like the changing of schedule from office and studio.

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BBC?
  • I'm Thankful for the position I'm in however from my perspective, although I'm only an apprentice I feel like I still do everything the other runners do. I understand that this is my role however I should still have the chance to learn new things and work/shadow others in different areas of work.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • The college aspect is structured through out the year however there isn't a solid time allocated to our learning blocks which can be frustrating. I like to have time to plan an know in advance. I get a great deal of support from my tutors as well.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • I've noticed that there is a divide between work and college. I don't feel like im in training when im at work therefore I dot feel like I get support in my learning from my employer however I do get support in many other ways.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • I understand apprentices are paid a lower fee however I feel that the amount of time I put into coming in to work and paying for travel, rent, daily food costs it can feel a bit tight with my monthly wage.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • I volunteer outside of work but since starting this job haven't had as much time to do so. I live quite far from my work so once I've commuted back and forth each day I have little time for leisure.

  • 9. Would you recommend BBC to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would and I wouldn't. I think that the BBC is a great starting point for young people who want industry experience however, I feel as though the scheme isn't for everybody. Some may not like the working pattern or the long studio hours or even the struggle to stay on further down the line in a different position just because of the short term contracts that can mess with people.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BBC?
  • Be honest in your application. You don't always need experience but you need enthusiasm. The interviews don't feel formal so be yourself and relax as if you're chatting to current colleagues. I would have liked to have been told more about what role I was going to do when I was offered as I had no idea until I turned up on the first day.
