I am a Production Apprentice and so far, I have had placements in BBC Rewind, who work with archive and BBC Gaeilge, the Irish language department. I find that no two days are the same, I am always doing something different, developing new skills and learning a lot along the way.
I have completed a number of training courses, including data protection and working with children. I have learned how to work in an office environment as well as practical skills such as how to set up a camera and edit video and audio.
I am really enjoying my apprenticeship, I find that the teams work well together and are very welcoming and patient. I think that this course has exceeded my expectations in that I have been given more creative freedom than I thought I would have to make new content.
From my experience, I feel that everyone is valued equally and that everyone's work and efforts are appreciated.
I think that overall, the programme is structured well, however, often dates and times are not communicated until quite close to an event. There are regular study periods throughout the year, which I find beneficial as they give me the chance to learn about what I have been doing as part of my job.
I have found it easy to get support from my training provider and have found my tutor to be approachable if I have any questions or need some help with my work.
I feel that I receive a good level of support from my employer, everyone I have come across has been helpful and supportive.
My salary meets my costs very well.
There are my volunteering opportunities related to work, such as BBC School Report, which I have been able to take part in. It has helped me to develop skills which I might not have otherwise had the chance to improve, such as speaking in front of large groups.
Yes
I think that the BBC is a very positive, creative and welcoming workplace that is inclusive of everyone.
Be yourself, be enthusiastic, be interested and try your best.
