  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a Materials Engineering CAM Project Engineer. I am therefore responsible for the day to day running and reporting of the CAM. This involves monitoring spend, trends and looking forward to future spend and cash flow. I monitor the risks associated with the CAM and how to minimise these where possible. I think that my day-to-day work could improve in ways but for the moment i am pretty happy with what im doing and i would happily continue on this path.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Yes, I have learnt alot on Earned Value Managment as a specific skill to project control. I have undertaken internal business training on the full project lifecycle for a CAM team. My skills of working in a team and communicating with others have been flung in at the deep end at time, and something I previously thought I had mastered at school was taken to a whole new level - no better way to learn though. I've learnt that everyone is in the same boat at work, its a team effort to achieve a goal not a individiual performance.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • 8/10 I love working and learning and studying, they go hand in hand. It has met my expectations with the work/study balance. My team have been welcoming and have taught me the ropes where possible in their own busy schedules. The culture of BAE is different to what I imagined, there is a lot of negativity flowing throughout but I knew that would be the case in a large organisation, you just have to make the most of been the bright eyed fresh face to the business!

  • 4. How valued do you feel by BAE Systems?
  • I feel valued by my immediate team and stakeholders which I report to. BAE wouldn't fall to pieces within my abesnces but it would put a stress and strain on my team so I feel value in the work I complete as I know it has an affect on the surronding area. PDR's and ones to ones at BAE give you the recongition and praise you deserve. Work completed is usually greated with a thank you and a smile, which is always nice when you have spent time on it. I feel thoroughly involved in all team meetings and workload.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • Good corporate and workplace induction. The degree programme I am on takes a much higher importance when studying so higher apprenticeship is partially neglected but I know the theory I am learning as part of my degree will support my apprenticeship too. Support from college and managers at work to complete and undertake all aspects of the programme. Generally there isn't much room for improvement and i am overall very happy with the structure of my placements.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • Sometimes feels like we are looked down on by our tutor and are our opinions are less valued regarding the programme but they shouldn't forget we are working too so they should look at us more grown up and indpendant rather than a school environment. As for guidance and support they know the HA well and will endeavour to help where required. I think apart from this there are some good areas with my training provider with certain parts of the course but i definitely would reccomend some improvements.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • Really good support, ask where they can improve workload to include all competencies and ensure I am progressing at the right speed. Support the extra activities which come along such as college days, outward bound experience. Support all aspects of work, university, apprenticeship and personal life. I think that a lot more is on offer to us and the apprentices here at BAE Systems compared to a lot of other companies in the local area for sure.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • My wage is pretty decent considering im only an apprentice. It's a really good incentive the company has to increase our wages every year prooviding we complete our NVQ course for the year and our college assignments etc. Comparing this pay packet to other apprenticeships in the local community i would definitely say that it's pretty decent and this is a big motivation for the apprentices definitely. It also helps those apprentices who may have been struggling with paying rent etc.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • Outside of work I am a keen sports person playing hockey for my local team and going horse riding. I think that a lot more is on offer to us and the apprentices here at BAE Systems compared to a lot of other companies in the local area for sure and i know that a lot of emails are sent to people on site as well to inform them of local charities and events that are on. I would definitely say that overall the company does try to offer a few different activities to their employees but also i think they could have a few internal activities too.

  • 9. Would you recommend BAE Systems to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 9b. Why?
  • I would recommend BAE Systems because i believe the company gives you a great opportunity to grow as a person. You gain valuable skills that you cannot get from further education. It is a great company that cares about apprentices and is willing them on to develop. This company gives back what you put in. I think that anyone could definitely get a lot out of the different placements and work they have on offer within the company and they could definitely find their own route and even if they decide it's not for them, they can leave with the money they've earnt as well as good education and qualifications too.

  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to BAE Systems?
  • Show that you are commited and eager to learn. Make sure your ambitious but also grounded. Learn about what the company offers and tell the company why they should employ you, what makes you stand out amongst the other applicants. Make the most of the opportunity you get, if you are lucky enough to have an interview. Don't panic whilst you're having the interview and make sure you just do your best too and even if you are unfortunate to not get in, learn from what you've done and try to get something out of the experience anyway
