  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis:
  • I am a Junior analyst, and a Technology apprentice. My daily routine is very loose and I am mostly free to delegate my time as I see fit. personally I like to spend my morning focusing on addressing easy tasks and general admin jobs/ email communications. then my evening is spent working on my current project. at the moment this is mainframe development with COBOL and DB2.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • Most of my work is based on the mainframe and before this apprenticeship I had no knowledge of what that meant or how to use it. now I am capable of preforming basic tasks and creating programs within the mainframe. my general technical competency has increased dramatically since starting the job and this ties in with the soft skills I have developed to allow me to become much more capable of being a productive worker.

  • 3. To what extent do you enjoy your programme?
  • the program has put me in a great environment to learn with lots of opportunities to grow and lots of friendly inclusive staff. my team has welcomed me and my managers have worked very hard to find me opportunities and integrate me into the team. I greatly enjoy this apprenticeship and am happy to be part of the company

  • 4. How valued do you feel by NatWest?
  • the bank has regularly given me feedback on everything I do in a way that helps me grow as a persona and improve my work quickly. I have been shown that the company is willing to invest heavily in my future and that they value me and my work.

  • 5. How well organised/structured is your programme?
  • my program is very loosely structured but well organised. I am given a large degree of freedom as long as I can consistently produce good quality work and at this early point in my career I love the environment that this creates.

  • 6a. How much support do you receive from your training provider?
  • my training provider meets regularly with me to discuss my career and my work both in the future and the present. I have contact with an advisor who ensures that I am given the training I need as dictated by me and my manager. they set me regular tasks to ensure I complete everything In a timely fashion.

  • 6b. How much support do you receive from your employer?
  • the bank offers me support in any and all problems both professional and personal. I have a mentor and a buddy who assist me in developing my career and improving my current work and our global operating model means that there is easy access to professionals from across the world who are all very happy to help me.

  • 7. How well does your salary/package meet your costs?
  • my personal costs are very low as I live at home and have a relatively short commute. I am able to use the money from my pay to easily cover these costs and save a large amount while still enjoying my self in my social life.

  • 8. Are there many opportunities outside of work?
  • the bank offers a wide variety of career and social activities and events outside of work. I have not yet taken advantage of most of these but am glad to know that they are at my disposal.

  • 9. Would you recommend NatWest to a friend?
  • Yes


  • 9b. Why?
  • they bank has been good to me and allowed me to develop a career that I can be proud of without university. at the same time I get to meet great people and make money in the process. most of my friends are university students and at first being an apprentice was always a sign of being in a worse place in life. but I'm making more money, doing less work and creating a better career than the vast majority of them. this job is one of the best things that has ever happened to me


  • 10. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to NatWest?
  • be confident. I got in so you don't need any good qualifications. the process seems intimidating but its not that bad. not in the least. anything that you need to know will be told to you by the bank. they'll treat you right.
