Civil Enginnering Review

Civil Engineering Apprenticeship. In this job role, I do a mixture of daily activities most involve creating CAD drawings and reports alongside engineers. As well as this, we are required to attending meetings. So far, I have worked on a few Rail projects inside of my Civil apprenticeship allowing me to work interdisiplinary.

Throughout joining my apprenticeship, I have developed my CAD skills to a high standard whislt also gaining engineering knowledge beside my college course. I have done a number of training courses since joining Arup, such as CDM for designers, Site Safety Briefings, Rail Introduction. These have helped me build up knowledge and skill to build my confidence in being able to progress as a engineer.

I Love my programme. I have been put into a very friendly team who all love their job and get on with it, but will gladly involve you in activities and are very keen to help you learn. I also enjoy the volume of work I get with my job as it keeps me busy and interested as there is always new oportunies to learn something new. The company more than exceeded my expectations, with a friendly and sort of laid back environment to make you feel comforatable.

I feel very valued by arup. This is because I am constantly reasssured of the quality of my work through internal and external checks of the drawings ive produced. I am always put forward for new opportunities, such as presenting or new projects, which makes me feel excited to try new things,

My programme is very organised, when starting, I was assigned a older team member as a mentor to learn off. This has proved really helpful as I know theres always someone there that can provide me help with college work and Arup work.

There has been support from my training provider if I ever have any problems with my college, they have tried to sort out the problems at hand. However, with personal support I dont feel comfortable enough to speak out about what I need help with in order to get advice from my training provider.

My Employer is amazing with giving me support.. There has been multiple incidences where i wasnt comfortable with the circumstances I was in, e.g living situations, and my Manager has been able to listen to me to take the appropriate action. This includes appropriate time off, telling a HR member of staff. HR have also given me the support needed, giving me access to help / support lines and letting me have bi-weekley meetings to make sure im comfortable enough to concentrate in work. They always go out of there way to make sure im doing okay or to see if I need anything which is great!

My Salary is very good for a apprenticeship. However, living by yourself and not with parents does mean I have to make it strech. But, work help me manage my budget by giving me a season ticket loan and taking the money out of my wage to enable me to get to work.

There is always company events going on outside of work, we have team socials every couple of months, payday drinks every month, summer and christmas parties and we have alot of charity/volunteering programmes that run throughout the year that everyone can get involved with. Arup if very good with arranging external community events in order to make the workplace more multi functional. There are local facilities around the office with it being in a city centre, multipule gyms, places to eat. Its great

Arup, has not only helped me gain alot of knowledge to progress in my desired carear, but they have made me feel valued when I was in a very bad place, struggling with a lot of issues. They have helped me, re-gain my confidence whilst putting me on the correct path for a degree and a carear.

I would advice them to be themselves through out the application and interview process, as Arup is a place that helps celebrate who you are, and they like to see individuality.
